Hasland Youngsters Get Special Help Keeping Safe

Tuesday 13th November 2012

Scouts, Cubs and Rainbows in Hasland had a visit from police to help make sure they are bright and safe on their bikes as the evenings get darker.

Scouts, Cubs and Rainbows in Hasland had a visit from police to help make sure they are bright and safe on their bikes as the evenings get darker.Section Officers (SO) Keith Lee and Alan Wright, who are Special Constabulary supervisors, visited the groups (left) to help deliver the 'Be Safe, Be Seen' message.

The initiative is about encouraging youngsters to make sure that they wear reflective clothing and that their bicycle is visible at night.

Youngsters were given booklets on cycle safety and reflective clips that can be attached to zips from Derbyshire County Council.

The Section Officers talked to the youngsters about making sure bikes can be seen during the darker evenings and also developed a cycle safety quiz for the each of the groups.

Quiz winners and runners up received a light set for their bikes, donated by Wilkinson’s.

Youngsters at the Scout group also brought in their bikes which SO Keith Lee, who is a fully qualified mechanic, checked to ensure they were safe and in good working order.

SO Alan Wright said: "Our aim is to help encourage local youngsters to be safe while they are out on their bikes, especially during the darker evenings when the 'Be Safe, Be Seen' message really does apply. I must say I was very impressed with the youngsters' knowledge and awareness of road safety, especially around the Highway Code.

"We would really like to thank Wilkinson's and Derbyshire County Council for their contributions and are pleased to be able to work in partnership with them - and if any other local youth groups would like us to visit, please get in touch."

The talks took place during the last two weeks of October.

Special Constables are volunteers who, after training, work alongside regular police officers and Police Community Support Officers to help to police their local communities.

Any youth groups in the Chesterfield area who would like officers to give a talk on cycle safety should contact Section Officer Alan Wright by emailing alan.wright.8005@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk.
