Communities That Work Project Draws To A Close

A scheme to help people find work in the Chesterfield area is to wind up at the end of March after a successful, extended six-year term.
Since 2008, the Communities That Work project has been funded by Chesterfield Borough Council and run by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust to help unemployed people facing economic, social and health barriers in their search for work. Council Success On Prosecution For Smoking Offence
Wednesday 22nd February 2012 A man has been successfully prosecuted by Chesterfield Borough Council after being caught smoking in a smoke free place.
Alfonso Francesco Desideri, 42, of Langdale Close, Linacre Woods, Chesterfield, pleaded guilty to an offence of smoking a cigarette in a hackney carriage and an offence of dropping litter (throwing the cigarette out of the hackney carriage), a hackney carriage being a smoke-free place.

Appeal After Man Suffers Severe Head Injuries In Road Collision
Tuesday 21st February 2012 Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road collision in North East Derbyshire.
At about 7.30am today (Tuesday February 21st), a collision occurred on the A616 Sheffield Road near Creswell. A black Toyota Rav 4 was travelling towards Creswell from the direction of Clowne when it was in collision with a blue Decathalon road bike. As a result of the collision, a 79-year-old man suffered a severe head injury and was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital by air ambulance. The cyclist, who lives in Sheffield, had travelled from Barlborough.
Officers would like to hear from anyone who either witnessed the collision or saw the cyclist during his journey. They can be contacted on the witness appeal line of 01773 572929.
Parents Notified About Secondary Places
Tuesday 21st February 2012 If you have a Year 6 child at home and are waiting to hear about school places, the wait is nearly over as Derbyshire County Council prepare to send out thousands of letters next week to tell parents which secondary school their child has been offered a place at.
The authority will send out letters on 1st March making offers of secondary school places to 7,722 Derbyshire children. Of those who applied by the closing date, 98.7% have been offered their first choice school - up from 96.2% last year and the highest number yet. Consultation Ahead Of £200m Elderly Care Transformation
Tuesday 21st February 2012 Plans for a £200 million investment to transform residential and community care across Derbyshire have now been approved and announced.
Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet gave the ambitious scheme - to deliver dementia-friendly care and state-of-the-art accommodation to hundreds of older people - the go-ahead at its meeting yesterday, Monday 20th February.

75 New Homes Go Up At Queen's Park!

Over 100 people attended the Queen's Park event with a total of 75 bird boxes being made by local people.

Sports Clubs 1-1 Support With Club Developers Scheme
Tuesday 21st February 2012 Sports clubs are being offered the chance to receive one-to-one support to help them achieve goals such as increasing club membership or producing a club development plan, as part of a new Club Developers scheme in Derbyshire.
Club Developers is being launched by Derbyshire Sport as part of its 2012 Legacy Programme, and aims to support around 60 clubs in the county.
A workforce of 'Club Developers' with experience in sports development are currently being trained, and will work with selected clubs on a one-to-one basis for a short period of time. READ MORE...
Sale Of Fake DVDs and CDs Earns Trader Suspended Sentence
Tuesday 21st February 2012 A trader has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting selling counterfeit film DVDs and music CDs at car boot sales.
Derbyshire County Council prosecuted Andrew Porter, 43, of Slant Lane, Shirebrook after he sold counterfeit goods at car boot sales in Pleasley.
A joint raid by trading standards and police officers on Porter's stall found almost 2,800 counterfeit discs. On two other visits to the stall on separate days, undercover officers were sold counterfeit DVDs. READ MORE...
These Bins Are Made For Talking - And They Love Your Rubbish
Tuesday 21st February 2012 Talking bins, which have been proven to reduce litter levels, are coming to Chesterfield to show some love to people who drop their rubbish in the bin.
The bins, brought to the streets of London by Keep Britain Tidy as part of the 'Love Where You Live' campaign, have shown that making 'doing the right thing' fun helps to change behaviour - with statistics showing they collect 50% more rubbish than normal bins.

Council Tax Changes For Empty Properties And Second Homes
Tuesday 21st February 2012 We have learned that houses in Chesterfield that are left empty for more than six months, along with second homes, will see a reduction in their Council Tax discounts from 1st of April.
Councillor Jim McManus, Executive Member for Housing at Chesterfield Borough Council said: "The last review of our discount levels was back in 2003 when the housing market was a lot different to what it is today. We now have much greater demand for properties at an affordable price, so the reduction in Council Tax discounts is aimed to encourage property owners to bring properties back into use, making more available for local people." Kids Now Making A Splash At A Derbyshire School

Youngsters from across the region will soon be able to enjoy more splashing about in the water after a Langwith school started work on a new £217,000 indoor pool.
The two-foot deep splash pool, complete with new changing rooms, music, light and even scent projections, is being created at Stubbin Special School, in Burlington Avenue. The pool is set to be created in the school's nursery unit, which is the only place in the county where pupils with special educational needs play and learn alongside their peers from across the community. Still Time To Consult On Youth Services
Tuesday 21st February 2012 There is still time to have your say on the future of Derbyshire's youth services as Derbyshire County Council is running a ten-week consultation - ending March 18th - to ask local people, youth activity users, staff, and partner organisations to give their views on proposed changes to the way youth activities are offered.
Under the proposals the authority would: continue to provide professionally qualified youth workers to support vulnerable young people and families facing difficulties; no longer provide front-line activities for teenagers and it would close youth clubs and the mobile service; support voluntary, independent and community groups which already provide most activities; set up a Youth Activities Grants scheme to support new projects, voluntary, community and independent groups; review youth centres to transfer or dispose of the buildings. Local Dementia Group Pilot Success For Derbyshire Healthcare
Tuesday 21st February 2012 Occupational Therapists, including April Saunders and Jenny Gould, from Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's Community Mental Health team for Older People (North East) recently ran a community group therapy pilot, the 'Killamarsh Tuesday Group', for people with dementia in the local area.
This was following feedback from a local GP that more support was needed for people with dementia.

HSE Aim To Reduce Derbyshire Construction Site Deaths

Construction sites in Derbyshire are being put under the safety spotlight as part of an intensive inspection initiative aimed at reducing death, injury and ill health.
From next week, inspectors from the Health & Safety Executive will be visiting sites in Bolsover, Staveley, Ashbourne, Belper, Matlock, Darley Dale, Bakewell, Alfreton, Clay Cross and Chesterfield where refurbishment or repair works are being carried out. UPDATE: Chesterfield Royal Hospital Norovirus Outbreak
Monday 20th February 2012 Chesterfield Royal Hospital have told us this morning that unfortunately the situation remains the same at the hospital with visitors still unable to attend adult in patient wards.
The hospital continues to do everything it can to contain the outbreak and stop it spreading further and has produced a video explaining to patients, their families and the community about the precautions taken and why.

Appeal After Elderly Woman Suffers Jewellery Theft
Monday 20th February 2012 Police in Chesterfield are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman had three chains stolen from her neck.
At around 10.25pm on Friday, February 17th, a 70-year-old woman was stood in New Square outside the Portland Hotel when she was approached by a man. The man put his arm around the victim and grabbed the necklaces she was wearing, and pulled them from her neck. The victim did not suffer any injuries during the theft.

UPDATE: Chesterfield Royal Hospital Norovirus Outbreak
Sunday 19th February 2012 The Chesterfield Royal Hospital continues to be closed to visitors to adult inpatient wards and it remains in the grip of what it calls "the worst outbreak we have known in years".
They say the infection still continues to affect patients and unfortunately, a large number of staff have contracted the virus and are therefore unable to work on the wards until they have been symptom free for 72 hours.
They have told us that they wish to thank everyone in the community for their "Tremendous understanding" at what is proving to be a difficult time - and have produced a video explaining how they are trying to break the cycle of this outbreak. Fire Crews Free Trapped Passengers

Fire crews from Dronfield and Chesterfield were called this morning (Sunday) to remove 3 people trapped in a vehicle on Langdale Avenue.
Crews were called to the incident at 10.30 am and removed the roof of the car to free the passengers who were treated at the scene by ambulance and fire personnel before being taken to hospital.
More Virus Outbreaks Overnight At Chesterfield Royal Hospital
Friday 17th February 2012 18:15 Chesterfield Royal Hospital has told us today that, despite closing adult in patient wards to visitors, there have been more cases of Norovirus identified in the last 24 hours, and 9 wards are now closed to visitors tonight.
They are stressing though, that although adult in-patient wards are closed to visitors, A&E service and out-patient clinics are operating as usual.
They request that, over the next few days if your appointment is routine and non-urgent and you have symptoms of Norovirus, please call them to re-arrange. Ring the number on your appointment letter or 01246 516090. To try to contain the further spread of the infection they are asking that on arrival and before leaving hospital, that visitors clean hands thoroughly using the handwash stations AND the hand gel (dispensers at entrances and in clinics). We will continue to give updates as we get them.
Offenders Give Back To The Community
Friday 17th February 2012 Offenders on the Community Payback Scheme are giving a Chesterfield park a facelift as part of a partnership project to improve the area and reduce nuisance behaviour.
Derbyshire Probation Service’s Community Payback team started the clean-up at Lansbury Avenue Park, Mastin Moor yesterday, Thursday, February 16th.
As part of the project, offenders, carrying out unpaid work, will remove old fencing, cut back overgrown trees and bushes and carry out a general tidy up of the park. They will be at the park every Thursday for the next six weeks. READ MORE...
Council Tax Freeze Proposed By North East Derbyshire
Thursday 16th February 2012 North East Derbyshire District Council has told us this morning that it is proposing to freeze Council Tax for the second year running.
They say that they are recommending that there be no increase in its share of the bill to help hard-pressed families already struggling with the rising cost of living.

Thursday 16th February 2012 Police have released CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to in connection with the theft of jewellery in Chesterfield town centre.
At around 4pm on Saturday, February 4th a 48-year-old man was approached outside the Portland Hotel in Chesterfield town centre by three men who offered him a chain and rings.

Apprentice Scheme Launches At Derbyshire County Council
Thursday 16th February 2012 Young people are being invited to find out about new career opportunities at the official launch of Derbyshire County Council's drive to recruit 500 apprentices.
The county council is creating 700 apprenticeships over the next four years - 500 within the authority and 200 in private industry.

Chesterfield Royal Goes Into Lockdown As Norovirus Spreads
Wednesday 15th February 2012 Chesterfield Royal Hospital has announced today that it has closed the hospital to visitors of all adult inpatient wards with immediate effect.
It comes after eight wards have fallen victim to outbreaks of Norovirus, with both patients and staff suffering.
Norovirus (or winter vomiting disease) is an unpleasant 'bug' that causes violent sickness and diarrhoea. It IS NOT a hospital acquired infection, but is an infection that spreads rapidly in the community. The illness is self-limiting, but can have severe consequences for patients who are already fighting illness and recovering from surgery. READ MORE...
Dronfield Police Station To Close Next Week

Two Arrests For Drugs Possession And Intent To Supply
Wednesday 15th February 2012 Two people have been arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply after police carried out a warrant at a house in Clay Cross.
Officers raided the property on Penncroft Drive, Danesmoor on Friday, February 10th, after receiving information from the community. Local officers and uniformed task force searched the house and found suspected cannabis. A 35-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply. They have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. Sergeant Aidan Stones, who is responsible for Neighbourhood Policing in the area, said, "I would urge anyone in the Clay Cross area to contact me through the non-emergency number if they are concerned about drug misuse in their community, in particular about the effects on young people."

Communal Garden Space Gets Facelift
Tuesday 14th February 2012 Residents in Staveley will benefit from a new communal garden area that’s been created to reduce anti-social behaviour.
The garden, located at Devonshire Close, was once a run-down space and often attracted young people who used the area to drink and cause general nuisance to residents.

Big Plans For Chesterfield's Future

Youth Council To Visit Brussels

Increased Police Presence After Grave Thefts
Tuesday 14th February 2012 Police in Eckington have increased patrols around a cemetery following a number of thefts of ornaments from graves.
A number of ornaments have been takes from graves in Cemetery Lodge, Sheffield Road over the last two weeks.

Ozbox Partnership Sees More Kids Box Clever
Tuesday 14th February 2012 Fifty volunteers have attended a three-day course at Chesterfield Police Station to allow them to deliver Ozbox sessions across the county.
The course is the latest sport/citizenship programme produced by the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain (PCCGB) as part of their Contender Plus programme.

The Air Ambulance was called to an incident on Station Lane New Whittington yesterday (Sunday 12th February).
East Midlands Ambulance Service has confirmed today that it received an emergency call at 10:58 on Sunday 12th February 2012 and the caller reported that someone had been kicked by a horse.

Ice Is Not Nice! Fire Officer Warns Of Frozen Dangers
Monday 13th February 2012 The icy cold weather may have stopped football matches, caused problems on the roads and forced people to wrap up this weekend but, for one group of emergency personnel, the recent cold snap was a blessing in disguise.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has 4 water safety units in the County - one of which is in Chesterfield - and Saturday morning saw training for rescues from icy water in a frozen over Chesterfield Canal. Jewellery Scam Warning From Police
Monday 13th February 2012 Police are reminding people to be vigilant to a fake jewellery scam in Chesterfield after a man had his chain stolen by conmen.
At around 4pm on Saturday, February 4th, a 48-year-old man was approached outside the Portland Hotel in Chesterfield town centre by three men who offered him jewellery. They put a chain around the victim's neck and asked him to buy it, but he declined. They then removed the victim's own chain leaving the fake one in place. It was only later that the victim realised what had happened and he contacted police. The men were all between 20 and 30-years-old, they all wore black and were of Eastern European appearance. Police are reminding people to be vigilant to strangers approaching them in the street and to report any suspicious behaviour.

Man On Sex Offenders Register After Indecent Exposure Arrest
Monday 13th February 2012 A man who indecently exposed himself to a woman in Chesterfield has received a police caution and been placed on the sex offenders' register.
On Tuesday, January 31st, a woman was sat in her car on Boythorpe Avenue when she saw a man indecently exposing himself in a nearby alleyway off Hunloke Avenue. Police arrested a 33-year-old man on Tuesday, February 7th for indecent exposure. He admitted the offence and was given a police caution and has been placed on the sex offenders' register for two years.
Lancers Capture Chesterfield Town's Highest Honour
Sunday 12th February 2012 A regiment with close links to Chesterfield was given the highest accolade the town can bestow on Friday night at a special council meeting attended by servicemen, their families and local dignitaries.
The 9th /12th Lancers (Prince of Wales') were granted Freedom of Entry To The Borough in recognition of their close links with the town and the number of new recruits who come from the town.

Drugs Raid Arrests In Brimington
Thursday 9th February 2012 Three people have been arrested after police raided a house in Brimington and found 20 suspected cannabis plants.
Officers from the Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out a warrant at the address on Heywood Street on Friday, February 3rd following information from the community. Once inside the property officers found 20 suspected cannabis plants in the loft area. Two men, aged 25 and 31 and a woman, aged 23, were arrested at the address on suspicion of production of cannabis. They have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

MP Urges Constituents To Get Help With Fuel Bills
Wednesday 8th February 2012 It's colder than ever and winter conditions have bitten the region over the last couple of days. However, with fuel costs soaring, many families are finding it difficult to keep homes warm.
Now, North East Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel is urging her constituents to get help heating their homes.
Figures from the Home Heat Helpline show that around 6,600 homes in North East Derbyshire may be entitled to some form of assistance with their fuel bills. On average the help is worth around £250 per household. READ MORE...
Green Grants Up For Grabs
Wednesday 8th February 2012 Groups and organisations wanting to start projects that benefit their environment are being urged by Derbyshire County Council to apply for a Greenwatch Action Grant.
The grants provide up to £500 for projects like allotments, nature conservation and environmental education projects and local recycling and energy-saving schemes.

Pupils On Patrol In Staveley

Parents parked inconsiderately outside a Staveley school received a telling off by pupils as part of an initiative with local police.
Y6 pupils from Woodthorpe Primary School joined officers from the Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and Derbyshire County Council's Sustainable Travel Team to carry out patrols outside the school.

4x4 Drivers Get Tracking Devices
Wednesday 8th February 2012 Two 4x4 owners have been presented with free tracking devices worth more than £500 following an action day targeting car crime in Chesterfield.
Peter Athorn of Eckington and Roger Hollingworth from Ashover won the tracking devices, including free fitting and five years' subscription, at a 4x4 crime reduction day held last month.

Advice For Local Residents As Winter Bites
Tuesday 7th February 2012 Motorists are being urged by Derbyshire County Council to take care on the roads this week as falling temperatures and the risk of ice continues.
It follows a weekend of wintry conditions that saw the county council's gritting teams heading out before during and after Saturday's snow which fell solidly for eight hours.

Chesterfield Borough Council Success On Court Prosecutions
Tuesday 7th February 2012 Chesterfield Borough Council has successfully concluded three prosecutions at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court.
On the 1st Feb, Mr Philip Timms of Elmwood House, Old Whittington, Chesterfield pleaded guilty to contravening a Tree Preservation Order by unauthorised severe pruning of five protected trees within the Order. The offence took place on 9th October 2011 at the defendant's property.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital Moves To Reduce Admissions

A new unit has been set up at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital which aims to reduce the need to admit patients.
The Ambulatory Care Unit is based on Bay 5 of the Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) and will provide clinical care that is not dependent on the need to admit patients into a hospital bed. Patients referred as unplanned emergencies and who are able to sit out will be seen promptly in the unit and managed by senior medical and nursing staff. Rise In Fake Booze Cases Prompts Warning To Off Licenses
Monday 6th February 2012 Off licence owners have been warned about the dangers of selling counterfeit alcohol and cigarettes after a rise in cases across the region.
Derbyshire County Council's trading standards officers have written to all 2,500 licensed premises in the county warning that they face prosecution if they are found to be selling illegal products.

Council Agrees To Invest In Leisure Centres
Monday 6th February 2012 Chesterfield Borough Council announced last week that it has agreed to continue to keep the running of its two leisure centres, Queen's Park Sports Centre (QPSC) and the Staveley Healthy Living Centre, under Council control.
The Council plans to invest a minimum of £2.5 million in a refurbishment and modernisation programme for Queen's Park Sports Centre and is presently in discussion with other potential funding partners that could bring further investment. Snow Update For Sunday Morning (5th)
Sunday 5th February 2012 Derbyshire County Council are saying this morning that the 'primary network' was ploughed and gritted throughout the night.
They are currently ploughing and gritting the secondary network and that local farmers are currently clearing snow on the 'Tertiary network'. They say that most roads are passable with care.
Stagecoach Chesterfield say that on many routes they are operating a main roads only service but that services in most places are running. The only service that is not running this morning is the X17 to Matlock and that is due to abandoned cars on the route which is currently making it impassable.
Gritters Out Tonight
Saturday 4th February 2012 Derbyshire County Council has tonight issued an update on how it is coping with the band of snow crossing the county saying, It has been snowing continuously since 2pm, though the snow is due to stop tonight, there are minor accumulations of snow on most roads with routes in the Peak District being hardest hit.
They say that they have been gritting all day and will continue throughout the night and that the gritters in the Peak District have ploughs on. Details of all the gritting undertaken in the last 12 hours can be seen on the gritting updates web page. Drivers are being advised to take caution on the roads and extreme care on any high routes.
The following roads are closed: A6024 Holme Moss; A628 Woodhead Pass; Woodhead Road; A57 Snake Pass; A54 Cat & Fiddle Road; Monks Road, Charlesworth. Other roads in the Peak District are passable with care.

Council Tax Freeze Confirmed
Friday 3rd February 2012 A council tax freeze for the second year running has been confirmed by Derbyshire County Council.
It means the council's share of council tax bills won't increase for a further 12 months.

County LibDems Oppose Tory Budget
Friday 3rd February 2012 During a lengthy, full Derbyshire County Council meeting on Wednesday, February 1st the Liberal Democrat Group - led by Cllr S Flitter and with half of members coming from Chesterfield - opposed the budget put forward by the Derbyshire Conservative controlling group.
Acknowledging that cuts had to be made and that under the previous Labour administration, all services were concentrated towards the main towns with very little used to fund outlying areas in the county, Cllr. Council Success On Court Prosecutions
Friday 3rd February 2012 Chesterfield Borough Council successfully concluded two prosecutions at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court on 25th January.
Craig Taylor, 24, of Hartington View, Staveley, pleaded guilty to an offence of depositing controlled waste (a gas powered barbecue) in a field near to Hartington View on or about 4th October 2011. He was fined £50 plus costs of £50 and a £15 victims' surcharge.
Shauna Stott, 21, of Chertsey Close, Grangewood, pleaded guilty to an offence of smoking in a smoke-free place on 22nd August 2011. She had initially been offered a Fixed Penalty Notice as an alternative to prosecution but did not pay the £50 penalty within 29 days (reduced to £30 if paid within 15 days). She was fined £33 plus costs of £50 and a £15 victims' surcharge,
£15 Million To Be Spent On Chesterfield Council Homes
Wednesday 1st February 2012 £15 Million is to be invested by Chesterfield Borough Council over the next financial year in order to make improvements to its housing stock in the town.
The Council says that the 'record spending level' - a 20% increase on expenditure in the present financial year - is a result of it's adopting of the Government's new self-financing scheme that comes into effect in April 2012.

Information Sought After Man Exposes Himself In Chesterfield
Wednesday 1st February 2012 Police in Chesterfield are appealing for information after a man indecently exposed himself.
At around 4.15pm on Tuesday, January 31st, a woman was sat in her car on Boythorpe Avenue when she saw a man indecently exposing himself in a nearby alleyway off Hunloke Avenue. The woman then drove off and later called police. The man is described as white, in his early 20's, of slim build with short light brown hair. He was wearing blue tracksuit bottoms with a white stripe running down the leg and a dark coloured top. He was with a small white terrier dog that was wearing a tartan body warmer.

Man Charged With Two Counts Of Robbery
Wednesday 1st February 2012 An 18-year-old man has been charged with two offences that happened on the same night.
Michael Kohut, from Clarence Road, Chesterfield, appeared at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court on Saturday January 28th charged with the robbery of a man on Boythorpe Avenue, Chesterfield at 11pm on Thursday Jan 26th.
He also faced a charge of robbery in connection with an offence a few minutes earlier in town on Baden Powell Road.
Police Ask For Information About 'Deliberate' Bin Fires
Wednesday 1st February 2012 Police in Barrow Hill are appealing for information after a spate of deliberate bin fires in the area.
At around 10pm on Monday, January 30th, police were called to Romford Way where a wheelie bin in the back garden had been set on fire. At 11.40pm that night police were called to another fire on Chigwell Way where two bins had been set alight. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and put out both fires. Officers from the Barrow Hill and Whittington Safer Neighbourhood Team are advising residents to be vigilant and contact them with any information about the fires. They are also reminding people to store bins away from windows or wooden fencing and to only put them out on the morning of collection.

Fake Tobacco Factory Gang Jailed

An operation led by HM Revenue and Customs which halted what they termed today as 'organised crime on an industrial scale' has now seen a criminal gang handed jail sentences at Nottingham Crown Court.
A Chesterfield factory, raided in 2009 by officers from HMRC was, the court heard, potentially capable of making up to 625 million counterfeit cigarettes and five million pouches of fake hand rolling tobacco a year and was said to be worth over £131 million pounds in lost revenue a year, which could have been more as it's believed the gang planned to expand to make counterfeit alcohol. Chesterfield Man Jailed After Arson Attack
Tuesday 31st January 2012 A man who set fire to another man's car has been jailed.
Ian Ward, 46, targeted the Citroen Xzara when it was parked on the driveway of a house on Milton Crescent, Chesterfield. He smashed the driver's side window and set the seat alight in the early hours of October 8th, 2011. Ward of Didcot Close, Chesterfield was arrested and charged with arson after his blood was found on the car door near to the smashed window. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was jailed for two years following a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday, January 25th.
Budget Decisions On Youth Service Force Huge Local Debate

Chesterfield Man In Court Over Illegal Transportation Of Tyres

A Chesterfield man received a suspended prison sentence after illegally storing thousands of tyres and transporting some of them to Vietnam.
Andrew Revell, aged 50, of The Green, Hasland appeared at Derby Crown Court on Friday, January 27th.

Motorcyclist Airlifted To Hospital After Serious Collision
Saturday 28th January 2012 Police are appealing for witnesses after a road accident has left a 32-year-old motorcyclist in a serious condition tonight.
At 12.55 pm today (Saturday) a collision took place between a blue and white Suzuki motorcycle and a blue mondeo on the B6012 road between Baslow and Chatsworth. The rider of the bike suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to North Staffordshire Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Budget Cuts Force Police Enquiry Office Changes
Saturday 28th January 2012 Following reductions in police budgets announced in October 2010 Derbyshire Constabulary was left with a budget deficit of £13m by the end of 2012/13 and a predicted total of £24m by 2014/15.
Due to these cuts it now says that it is to change some enquiry office services throughout the county.

Derbyshire County Council Budget Plans Announced
Friday 27th January 2012 Derbyshire County Council says today that it is proposing to freeze council tax for the second year running.

Arrests Made In Money Laundering Probe
Friday 27th January 2012 Derbyshire police say that they have arrested three people during warrants carried out in Chesterfield, Bolsover and Amber Valley as part of a money laundering operation.
Officers raided six addresses in Inkersall, Brimington, Bolsover and South Wingfield on Thursday, January 26th. They recovered property including suspected contraband cigarettes, suspected drugs, a number of vehicles and other property. A 42-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman were arrested following a raid in Inkersall on suspicion of money laundering offences. A 38-year-old man was arrested at an address Bolsover on suspicion of possession of cannabis. They have all been bailed pending further inquiries.

Cancer Charity Loses Cash After Burglary
Wednesday 25th January 2012 A cancer charity has fallen victim to burglars who stole cash from an office in Dronfield.
In early December 2011, the office of Ashgate by Design on Lea Road in Dronfield was burgled. Sometime between 5.40pm on Saturday December 10th and 9.30am on Monday December 12th, the shopping complex was entered and the safe in the charity shop was forced. Burglars got away with a considerable amount of cash.

Police Appeal After Attack On Chesterfield College Student

Detectives in Chesterfield are appealing for witnesses after a teenager was assaulted and had his wallet stolen.
At around 6.15pm on Monday, January 23rd a 17-year-old boy was walking along a footpath at the end of Infirmary Road after leaving Chesterfield College when he was approached by two youths.

Man Jailed After Dronfield House Fire
Tuesday 24th January 2012 A man who set fire to a house while he was inside it has been jailed for three years.
Richard Musgrove, 32, started the fire in the bedroom of his partner's house on Wilson Street, Dronfield on May 8th, 2011. He called the fire service when the blaze began to get out of hand and when fire fighters arrived, he was inside the property suffering the effects of smoke inhalation. The fire, which damaged most of the first floor of the house, was started when clothing was set alight. Musgrove, of Larpit Green, Whitwell was arrested and charged with arson. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was jailed for three years at a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Friday, January 20th.
Police Seize Alcohol From Youngsters
Tuesday 24th January 2012 Police in North East Derbyshire seized 30 bottles of alcohol from underage drinkers as part of a clampdown on nuisance behaviour.
Officers from the Clay Cross area Safer Neighbourhood Teams confiscated the booze from several youngsters during routine patrols in the villages of Pilsley, North Wingfield and Wingerworth. They took 19 bottles of lager from a 16-year-old boy they stopped near the church yard in Pilsley on Friday, January 20th. Tuesday 24th January 2012 Derbyshire County Council is launching one of it's biggest ever apprentice drives and is urging local business bosses to attend events which will explain how they are offering grants of £2,500 to help them take on apprentices.
The council says it's hoping to create 700 positions over the next four years and is working with Learning Unlimited, Chesterfield College's employer engagement and apprenticeship arm, in managing the scheme to create 500 positions with the county council and 200 in private industry. Police Appeal After Coal Aston Fire
Tuesday 24th January 2012 Police are appealing for witnesses to a suspicious fire at an unoccupied house on Eckington Road, Coal Aston.
The fire started on Sunday January 22nd, between 7.10pm - 7.30pm, and is, say police, being treated as arson. Officers believe the offender or offenders may have been carrying some sort of container and that their clothes will smell of paraffin or petrol. Minor damage was caused.

Parents Warned Of Dangers Of Teenage Drinking
Tuesday 24th January 2012 Police and the Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership are urging parents to consider the consequences of buying alcohol for under 18's.
At a recent meeting of the partnership's Violence, Alcohol harm and Licensing (VAL) group it was discussed that parents are playing a significant role in contributing to underage drinking and problems associated with it.

Police Seek Help After Serious Assault In Chesterfield
Monday 23rd January 2012 Police are asking for information after a man sustained a serious abdominal injury after a fight in Chesterfield on Saturday January 21st.
The fight began on the dance floor of the Pacific Bar on Church Lane in the town just before midnight. The victim, a 26-year-old man from Mansfield Woodhouse, was involved in a scuffle in the club and then the disagreement continued outside the premises. Shortly after, as he walked away, he realised he had a wound. He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery. A 37-year-old man from Hasland was arrested on suspicion of wounding and released on bail after questioning. A 34-year-old woman sustained a minor injury.

Man Jailed For Broken Jaw Attack

A teenager who broke another man's jaw during a fight outside a Chesterfield pub has been jailed.
Curtis Martin, 19, was sentenced to 15 months in a young offenders' institution after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm. Martin assaulted a 19-year-old man outside Moo Bar on Holywell Street on September 16th, 2011 following a fight inside the pub. The victim suffered a double fracture to his jaw. Martin, of Haddon Close, Chesterfield was sentenced following a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Thursday, January 19th.
Child Cut From Railings On Chesterfield Canal
Monday 23rd January 2012 A child was yesterday (Sunday) rescued by fire crews after becoming stuck in metal railings just off Troughbrook Road in Hollingwood in the over flow to the side of Chesterfield Canal.
Crews from Chesterfield, Bolsover and Staveley, along with a water rescue unit from Chesterfield, were called at 14.14 pm to the scene. The Fire Service says that the child was cut from the railings using hydraulic equipment and first aid was administered at the scene. Ambulance and Police were informed.

Council Speaks Out Over Chesterfield Market Decisions
Thursday 19th January 2012 It's described as a tourist attraction - and certainly anyone who visits Chesterfield town centre often will recognise Shire horse Ben and his cart, who regularly stand outside Marks and Spencer on the High Street.
However, due to what they say are difficult economic conditions and, in order to protect the market for the future, Councillors have taken the decision to withdraw the horse and cart from it's place on the Market.

Teen Jailed After Unprovoked Attack In Chesterfield

A teenager has been sentenced to 16 months in a young offenders' institution after taking part in an unprovoked attack on a man in Chesterfield.
Jordan Maltby, 18, was one of three teenagers who attacked a 45-year-old man as he and his girlfriend walked along Sheffield Road on May 21st, 2011.

Men Charged After Vending Machine Thefts
Thursday 19th January 2012 Police investigating the theft of cash from 18 vending machines across Derbyshire have charged three men.
The men have been charged with conspiracy to steal between January 1st and January 11th. They will appear before magistrates in Derby on January 28th. They are aged 38, from Portsmouth, 45 from Southsea and 47 from Poole. Cash was taken from vending machines at pubs and supermarkets in Chaddesden, Alvaston, Derby city centre, Ripley, Belper, Chesterfield and along the M1. Derbyshire police are liaising with other forces across the country following similar thefts from vending machines nationwide.

3 Men Banned Following Fight After Chesterfield FC Game
Wednesday 18th January 2012 Three men have been given football banning orders following a fight after a Chesterfield FC home match.
Keith Hardy, Julian Morris and Mark Whitehead have all been banned from attending football matches for three years. Hardy (45), of Shirland Street, Chesterfield, pleaded guilty to affray and was ordered to carry out 80 hours unpaid work, given a three month curfew and told to pay £235 costs. Morris (36), of Cobnar Drive, Chesterfield, also admitted affray. He was sentenced to 100 hours unpaid work and a four month curfew and ordered to pay £100 costs. Whitehead (50), of Willow Garth Road, Chesterfield, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and was given a 12 month conditional discharge. He was told to pay £235 costs. READ MORE...

Wednesday 18th January 2012 Police have released images of two men they would like to speak to about an assault in Chesterfield where a man suffered a fractured jaw and head injuries.
The 21-year-old was in Corporation Street with a group of friends when they were approached by several men. One of the men punched the victim before leaving the area in a taxi.

First £67k Funding Round Gives 83 Groups A Sporting Chance
Wednesday 18th January 2012 More than 80 sports clubs and community groups will receive funding to help them promote healthy and active lifestyles in the first round of Derbyshire County Council's new £180,000 Sports Action Grant scheme.
The scheme was launched in October and 83 applications totalling £67,530 have now been approved in the first round.

Wednesday 18th January 2012 Police have released an Evo-Fit image of a suspect who is believed to have been involved in an assault at Killamarsh.
The incident happened at The Steelmelters pub on Netherthorpe Lane in the town on Christmas Eve.
At about 9.30pm, a 17-year-old youth from Sheffield was allegedly punched in the face and also received a hand injury when he was attacked in the toilets of the pub.

Police Appeal For Information After Burglar Steals Ashes
Tuesday 17th January 2012 Police are appealing for information relating to a burglary where an urn containing ashes was stolen.
A property on Queens Court, Chesterfield was broken into sometime between 3.45pm on Saturday, January 14th and 10.50am on Sunday, January 15th with a number of items stolen including jewellery, a television and an urn which contained the ashes of the victim's mother. The urn was described as approximately 4 inches in height with a screw on lid, silver colour with an engraved pattern design. Cervical Cancer Checks - NHS Plea To Women
Tuesday 17th January 2012 Women are being urged by NHS Derbyshire County to take advantage of life-saving smear tests ahead of European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which runs next week from 22nd to 28th January.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cause of cancer in women under 35. But going for a routine smear test can make all the difference - helping medical staff spot potentially cancerous cells growing on the cervix, or neck of the womb, before it’s too late.
Now NHS Derbyshire County is urging all women aged between 25 and 64 to think twice before they dismiss screening appointment letters, as early detection through screening, followed by treatment, can prevent up to 75 per cent of these cells turning into cancer. READ MORE...

Attempted Hijack Man Jailed
Tuesday 17th January 2012 A man who attempted to hijack a woman's car as she drove through Chesterfield has been jailed for three years.
Guy Maxfield, 23, jumped in front of the car forcing the woman to stop as she drove down Ringwood Road, Brimington at around 10.30pm on July 26th, 2011.
He banged on the car bonnet and told the woman to get out. The woman locked the door and rang police from her mobile phone and Maxfield walked away.

Tuesday 17th January 2012 The recent 4x4 Action day at the football ground was hailed a huge success as hundreds of motorists turned up and were given free property marking kits for their cars as part of an initiative to tackle thefts of 4x4s.
Almost 250 4x4 owners turned up to the event, organised by Derbyshire police at the B2net stadium, to have their cars protectively marked by SelectaDNA and SmartWater.

Scheme For Hard Of Hearing Extended
Tuesday 17th January 2012 It's been announced this morning that funding has now been approved to extend a Derbyshire County Council scheme to help people with hearing impairments feel safer in their homes after residents said it made them feel more secure.
The council fitted specialist door chimes with flashing lights and vibrating pagers to the homes of 400 people with hearing impairments between May 2010 and last October.

Sewer Upgrade In Bolsover Going Well
Monday 16th January 2012 Residents have been praised for their patience by Yorkshire Water as the company has announced its making good progress on its £500,000 project to upgrade its sewer network in Bolsover, near Chesterfield.
Since October, engineering specialists Barhale WSP have been working with the company to help reduce the risk of pollution incidents at the Station Road combined sewer flow as a result of bricks becoming lodged in the local sewer.

Council Apprenticeship Scheme Comes To A Successful End

Chesterfield Borough Council's apprenticeship programme has now been completed, and the Council says it's been a huge success, with all 30 apprentices having either secured employment or finished their training programme.
50% of the apprentices (15 people) secured employment, which is an exceptional result for a scheme of this type with the majority being employed within Chesterfield Borough. A further 12 people completed the scheme and are now seeking employment. READ MORE...

Fire Service Called To Clay Cross Incident Sunday Morning
Sunday 15th January 2012 At 9:37 this morning (Sunday, 15th January) fire crews were called after a vehicle crashed into a property on Market Street, Clay Cross.
The Fire Service says that only one vehicle was involved and no one was trapped. Crews shored up the property in order to enter and isolate services, and police and structural engineers were also at the scene.
Fire crews left the scene at 11.07am.

Boy Robbed In Dronfield - Police Appeal

Police are appealing for information after a 12-year-old boy was robbed in Dronfield at around 3.40pm on Thursday, January 12th - the victim and a friend were walking home from school along Gosforth Drive.
The victim was using his mobile phone when they were approached by two teenagers on bikes who demanded they hand them over. The victim said no and put his phone in his blazer pocket. One of the teenagers then put the boy in a headlock and said he had a knife. The attacker then reached into the victim’s blazer pocket and took a Blackberry Curve phone. No knife was seen. Coroner Rules On Chesterfield Mum Who Died In Wales
Wednesday 11th January 2012 A North Wales Coroner has ruled that a Chesterfield woman, on holiday with her family, died after suffering what he termed 'classic' carbon monoxide poisoning, during her inquest today.
Tracey Screen, died after being overcome by fumes from a barbeque, placed in the central area of the tent to maintain warmth.

34 year old Tracy Screen died after what's believed to be toxic fumes from a barbeque overcame her as she slept in a tent on a campsite in Gwynedd.

10,000 Calls To New NHS 111 Helpline In 2 Months
Monday 9th January 2012 Over 10,000 calls have been made to North Derbyshire's new non-emergency NHS 111 number since it went live two months ago.
7,956 people living in the Chesterfield, Bolsover, Bakewell and Matlock areas dialled the helpline direct between 25th October 2011 and 2nd January 2012, with another 2,425 automatically diverted to the service through their GP.
NHS 111 is a new health telephone number being piloted by NHS Derbyshire County and North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group. The number is for people needing health and medical care when it's less urgent than 999. READ MORE...

Monday 9th January 2012 In what's been termed a valuable exercise, neighbourhood police have gone out on the streets to find out about residents' concerns in South Chesterfield.
Officers from the Holmebrook and Rother Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out a walkabout on Grangewood Road and Church Street South to offer advice and hand out crime prevention equipment.

County Council Recognised For Work With Young People

Chesterfield Library Closure Begins On Monday
Friday 6th January 2012 A reminder that Chesterfield Library will close its doors for three weeks from Monday 9th January while work gets underway on a new reception area, and will be re-opening on Monday, January 30th.
While the work is carried out, library users can still browse the catalogue and make renewals and reservations online 24 hours a day. Books can also be renewed by contacting Call Derbyshire on 08456 058 058.
Library users can use their membership cards at nearby libraries, including Newbold, Brimington, Wingerworth and Old Whittington, or take advantage of the mobile libraries which visit the surrounding areas including Hasland, Calow and Holymoorside.
Alcohol Sales Ban For Store Following Underage Sales
Friday 6th January 2012 A Chesterfield store has had its licence to sell alcohol suspended for three months following an investigation by Derbyshire County Council.
Extra conditions have also been imposed on Singh's Wine and Food Store, Derby Road, following the licence review hearing at Chesterfield Borough Council.

Man Jailed After Police Trace Phone
Friday 6th January 2012 A man has been jailed for burglary after police traced a stolen mobile phone to his home.
Steven Priest, 33, broke into a house on Southfield Lane, Whitwell on October 28th, 2011 and stole a laptop, mobile phone, and wallet.
The phone had a tracking device and officers found it along with other stolen items at Priest's address on Welbeck Street, Whitwell. They also found and a small amount of cannabis. Priest was arrested and charged with burglary and possession of cannabis. READ MORE...
Stunell - Site Funding Fairer Deal For Travellers And Community
Thursday 5th January 2012 Communities Minister Andrew Stunell today announced the successful bids for £60 million of funding that will provide hundreds of new authorised pitches as well as better facilities for travellers on official sites.
This includes over £1.6 million for 20 new pitches in Bolsover, Derbyshire.
The Homes and Communities Agency have completed their bid assessments and recommended offers that will deliver over 750 new and improved pitches costing £47m. READ MORE...

Thursday 5th January 2012 Police in Staveley are appealing for the owners of the bike pictured below which was recovered on Christmas Day, to come forward.
A dog walker contacted police after finding the bike in a hedge off Worksop Road, Mastin Moor at around 10am on Christmas Day. The bike is silver Ezee electric assisted pedal cycle and is in good condition. The website address www.50cycles.com is printed on the frame. Officers from the Staveley Safer Neighbourhood Team want to trace the owner of the bike and find out whether it has been stolen.

Government Grant Keeps Derbyshire Warm This Winter
Wednesday 4th January 2012 As Chesterfield continues in the throes of winter Derbyshire County Council has welcomed the news that it has been awarded just over £94,000 from the Government's 'Warm Homes Healthy People' fund and can now set up a variety of schemes with community and voluntary organisations across the county.

Police Advise 999 Is For Emergencies - Not Ducks And Coats
Wednesday 4th January 2012 Derbyshire police are reminding people of when they should call 999 and in what situations they should ring the 101 non-emergency number.
The move comes 2 months after the force introduced 101 as the new number to call about issues that do not need an emergency response. On average, Derbyshire police receives 385 calls per day on the 999 - and around one third of these are not genuine emergencies. READ MORE...
Marsh Lane Burglary - Witnesses Sought
Wednesday 4th January 2012 Police are appealing for witnesses to a burglary at a house on Bramley Road in Marsh Lane near Eckington.
The offence happened between 5 - 5.30pm on Thursday December 29th when the 49-year-old occupant opened his door to two men. They pushed their way into the house and stole cash. The intruders had their faces covered. One wore an orange workman's coat, a purple baseball cap, green wellingtons and gloves. He was about six feet tall and of big build. The second man was slimmer and shorter. He wore a dark coat and gloves. Although this was an isolated incident, the local Safer Neighbourhood team will be paying extra attention to the area.

Man Jailed After Drugs Find
Wednesday 4th January 2012 A man has been sentenced to two years in prison for growing cannabis in a disused factory in Chesterfield.
Duc Hoang, 34 was arrested after police were called to a derelict factory on Foundry Lane, Chesterfield on October 20th, 2011. Once inside officers found Hoang along with more than a hundred cannabis plants at various stages of growth. Hoang, of no fixed abode, was arrested and charged with the production of cannabis. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was jailed for two years at a hearing at Derby Crown Court on Friday, December 23rd.

Derbyshire Police Awarded £64k To Tackle Motorway Closures

Drivers across England are to benefit from shorter motorway closures after crashes thanks to the roll-out of 3D laser scanning technology funded by the Government and police, Roads Minister Mike Penning has announced.
The Department for Transport has awarded 27 police forces across England a total of £2.7million, including £64,873 for Derbyshire Police. The funding, together with police and the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) contributions, will enable them to purchase 37 scanners. READ MORE...

Monday 2nd January 2012 Four people lost their lives while at work in Derbyshire last year and 447 suffered a major injury, according to the latest statistics.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a fresh warning about workplace safety after the number of deaths rose across Great Britain in 2010/11. It is urging employers to make the safety of workers their top priority for 2012, and is reminding them of their legal responsibility to ensure lives are not put at risk.

Police Helicopter An Effective Service For Derbyshire

Figures released this morning show that, countywide, police helicopter crews helped to find 214 crime suspects in Derbyshire between January 1st and December 1st 2011.
During the same period, the crews searched for 126 missing people, found 26 stolen or suspect vehicles and airlifted three casualties to hospital.

Keep Dogs Under Control Say Police
Wednesday 28th December 2011 As we all begin to walk off our Christmas excess a reminder from Police who are urging dog owners to keep their animals under control in the countryside following several incidents where sheep were attacked.
Last week, 2 sheep were found dead in a field at Brailsford and two more had been badly injured. Each animal appeared to have been mauled by a dog. The incident follows several reports of sheep worrying in villages around Ashbourne recently. PC Ian Cooper, of Ashbourne Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "While most dog owners are responsible, there is still a need to remind people that they have to be responsible for controlling their dog at all times. The law is quite clear - on agricultural land dogs must not chase or attack livestock."
The team has prepared some signs which will be available to farmers from next month if they wish to use them. For more information, call the team on the new non-emergency number, 101.
Death After Eckington Blaze
Monday 26th December 2011 A man has died after being found in a smoke-filled kitchen at a house on Castle Hill in Eckington.
The alarm was raised after neighbours of the man, who was 79 years old, saw smoke coming from his house at about 9pm last night (December 25th). The neighbour and the man's son-in-law got into the house and found him lying on the floor. They dragged him out and began to resuscitate him in the garden. Paramedics continued the resuscitation but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A joint investigation will be carried out by the police and fire service but the man's death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

Police Seek Information Over Quad Bike
Friday 23rd December 2011 Police in Ashover are appealing for information about a stolen quad bike that was recovered.
The bike was recovered on Cripton Lane at around 8.30pm on Sunday, December 18th after police received calls to say a quad had been abandoned at the side of the road. The bike, a red Honda, had been stolen from a nearby farm earlier that day. Police believe it was towed from the farm to where it was dumped. Diesel was also siphoned from a tractor on the farm on Hill Top Road, Ashover.
Officers from the Wingerworth and Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to speak to anyone who saw the quad being towed through the village or anyone acting suspiciously in the area. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Wingerworth and Rural SNT on the non-emergency number 101.

Man Jailed For Brandishing Air Rifle In Chesterfield

A Sheffield man who pointed an air rifle at another man during a night out in Chesterfield has been jailed for three years.
Brett Poynton, 25, was caught on CCTV brandishing the imitation rifle after an argument in a car park behind Sin nightclub, Holywell Street at around 11.15pm on August 11th.
Police were called and Poynton, of Gresley Road, Sheffield was arrested nearby by armed response officers.
Poynton was charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence and pleaded guilty at a hearing at Derby Crown Court in November.
He was jailed for 3 years on Friday, December 9th.

Monday 19th December 2011Derbyshire police have confirmed that a man has now been charged with the murder of Sharon Knapper from Tapton View Road.
Andrew Knapper, 41, appeared at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates' Court on Saturday December 17th charged with the murder of 39-year-old Sharon Knapper on Thursday December 15th.
He was remanded in prison custody to appear before Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday December 20th.
Police Appeal After Sexual Assault In Chesterfield
Monday 19th December 2011 Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted sexual assault in the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday December 18th) in Chesterfield.
A 44-year-old woman was walking along Lockoford Lane in the town at about 5.40am when a man came running up behind her and forced her to the ground.

Royal's Calendar Girls
Monday 19th December 2011 A woman who lost her baby to meningitis has been raising money to help the Chesterfield Royal Hospital ward that tried to save her son's life.
Jaden Green was just days old when he was taken to the Royal four years ago but, despite the best efforts of the staff on Nightingale, he couldn't be saved.

Access Road To Linacre Reservoirs Closed From Today

Police Name Chesterfield Woman Who Died After Assault

Police have now named the woman who died after being assaulted in Chesterfield yesterday (Thursday December 15th).
Sharon Knapper, 39, was taken to Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital yesterday morning after being assaulted at a house on Tapton View Road.
A post mortem examination revealed the cause of her death was a stab wound.

Bringing More Smiles To Children In Hospital At Christmas
Friday 16th December 2011 Employees at SCA Hygiene Products' Chesterfield Mill have played Santa Claus to children spending Christmas in hospital this year.

An officer on patrol at 5am in Ilkeston last December saw a car reverse off a drive, without lights, and travel onto a main road. UPDATE: Police Launch Murder Investigation After Woman Dies
Thursday 15th December 2011 We have just learned that police have now launched a murder investigation after a 39-year-old woman who was assaulted died in hospital.
The arrested man remains in police custody and will be questioned about the woman's death.
A post mortem examination will take place to determine the cause of her death. Her family have been informed but her name will not be released until tomorrow.

Appeal For Information On Missing Man Andrew Firmin
Thursday 15th December 2011 Police are becoming concerned for the safety of Andrew Firmin who has been missing from home since Sunday December 4th.
Mr Firmin, 49, (pictured) left his home on Sheffield Road, Chesterfield at 10pm and said he was going for a walk.
Officers believe that he may be in Sheffield and are appealing for him to contact them to let them know he is safe and well. He was last seen wearing a black hooded jacket, a dark top blue jeans and training shoes. Mr Firmin, or anyone who has seen him or who knows where he is, should contact the police on 101.

Police Community Support Officer Adele Chapman-Jones from the local Safer Neighbourhood team is now based within A&E at Chesterfield Royal Hospital one day a week.

Wednesday 14th December 2011 Over 700 young people will be helped into work after Derbyshire Council Council signed a contract to deliver one of their biggest ever apprenticeship drives.
And, an agreement with Chesterfield College's apprenticeship academy, Learning Unlimited, means that they will manage the four-year scheme.

Local Man Gets Long Prison Term For Rapes Of Young Girls
Tuesday 13th December 2011 A man who raped and sexually assaulted two young girls has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Darren Jeffrey, 36, (pictured) of Central Drive, Calow appeared at Derby Crown Court on Dec 12th to be sentenced for 2 rapes, 8 sexual assaults and 4 counts of causing/inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He had pleaded guilty to 14 offences. The offences took place between 2006 and 2010 in Chesterfield while the girls were under 13 years old. He will remain on the sexual offenders register for life and is disqualified from working with children.
DC Chris Yapp who investigated the case said: "These girls knew and trusted Jeffrey and he took advantage of them and abused that trust. The sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes."

Monday 12th December 2011 Voting is now open for a national awards programme that recognises and rewards the fantastic work of councillors from across the political spectrum.
The Councillor Achievement Awards, run by the Local Government Information Unit, are now in their 3rd year and anybody can nominate a councillor. There will be a total of 11 different awards on offer at the 2012 ceremony including Community Champion of the Year, Young Councillor of the Year and Leader of the Year.

Friday 9th December 2011 A Derbyshire police officer who was made an MBE earlier this year in the Queen's Birthday Honours has travelled to Buckingham Palace to collect his medal.
Sgt Stephen Osbaldeston, who was recognised for his services to policing and for setting up a boxing scheme for troubled youngsters, was presented with his MBE by HRH The Queen this Tuesday, December 6th.

Fatality At Dronfield Station
Monday 14th November 2011 It was confirmed yesterday that a woman's body had been found near to Dronfield railway station on Sunday morning after reports that a female had been struck by a train.
Officers from Derbyshire and British Transport Police and paramedics were called to the station and a woman was later pronounced dead at the scene. British Transport Police have said that the circumstances are not being treated as suspicious and that a file is being prepared for the Coroner.
There was some disruption to rail services though the lie is now running as normal.

Fatal Incident Near Chesterfield Train Station
Tuesday 8th November 2011 British Transport Police have confirmed that a report was received at 19.25pm today (Tuesday) of a person being struck by a freight train - travelling from Peak Forest to Toton - just 50 yards away from Chesterfield station.
Paramedics, along with British Transport and Derbyshire police attended the scene and the body of a male was found. Police say that the circumstances are not being treated as suspicious. East Midland Trains have told us tonight that trains are now running normally after earlier disruption.

Wednesday 2nd November 2011 The people of Chesterfield have been invited to show their support to soldiers from the 9th / 12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) later this month, when the Regiment parades through the town to mark their return from Afghanistan.

Apprentices Gain Employment
Wednesday 2nd November 2011 Chesterfield Borough Council's apprenticeship programme has been a major success, with nearly half of those taking part ending up in employment.
Out of the original 30 apprentices there are just two remaining and they are due to complete and leave the scheme by the end of the year.
Six of the apprentices have gone on to gain employment at the Council working in IT, housing and the SpirePride team. Others have found jobs at local firms with one re-locating to China after gaining a university place. READ MORE...

Markham Primed For New Business After £1.8m Clearance

Work on the latest phase of Derbyshire's flagship regeneration project has been completed to clear land for new businesses.
A further 22 acres at Derbyshire County Council's Markham Vale site is now ready for new business.

Today saw the launch of Derbyshire’s Poppy Appeal 2011 at the b2net stadium, with Chesterfield Football Club Chairman Barrie Hubbard buying the first poppy of this year’s campaign, watched by veterans from previous campaigns and wounded soldiers from Afghanistan - along with bereaved families from Chesterfield.

Friday 28th October 2011 Over the summer Chesterfield Borough Council has led a project that has resulted in a local cricket club setting up a junior section for 2012.
Over 100 young people from Old and New Whittington, aged between 8-16 years old, took part in a variety of activities at Brearley Park. The activities were delivered by local agencies and voluntary sports clubs and funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports.

Local MP Supports Silver Star Diabetes Challenge Launch
Friday 28th October 2011 Toby Perkins MP joined the Opposition Leader Ed Miliband MP, along with other Members of Parliament, at the launch of the Silver Star Diabetes Challenge at the House of Commons.

Monday 24th October 2011 A woman from North Derbyshire is hoping that her operation to deal with a brain aneurism will go ahead on Wednesday after it was cancelled by hospital bosses a total of SIX times.
Marie Murphy, 47, suffered a stroke 18 months ago and during treatment, it was discovered that she had the aneurism which could rupture at any moment and kill her.
Surgery is the only option and Marie was booked into the Hallamshire in Sheffield in July for the life saving operation to take place. However, a phone call just before told her there was no bed available due to a shortage of anaesthetists. READ MORE...

Chesterfield Man Jailed After DNA Link
Thursday 20th October 2011 A man has been jailed after he admitted burglary and asked for four other offences to be taken into consideration.
Dean Vine, 38,(pictured) broke into a house on Lockoford Lane, Chesterfield on March 5th, 2011 and stole jewellery and electrical items. He was arrested a few days later in relation to another offence. Officers searched his house and found the missing jewellery and his DNA on a jewellery box.

Friday 7th October 2011 Ken Cook, a leading influence within St John Ambulance Derbyshire over the past decade, has been honoured with investiture as a Commander of the Order of St John – one of the highest honours which can be conferred on the charity’s volunteers.

Yorkshire Water is undertaking the project which will cost over £500,000 in the Station Road area where there has been a number of pollution incidents at the as a result of bricks becoming lodged in the local sewer.

Thursday 15th September 2011 Officers investigating the death of a woman in Clowne have charged a 31-year-old man with murder.
Alexander Burnett, who was arrested on Tuesday evening, is remanded in custody until tomorrow (Friday 16th) when he'll appear at Nottingham Crown Court where a bail application will be considered. The victim has been named as Lee Hendry (52) who lived in Brimington. A post mortem examination revealed she was stabbed.

Chesterfield Soldiers Police Main Route In Helmand
Thursday 15th September 2011 It's been revealed today that four soldiers from Chesterfield are coming to the end of a six-month tour in Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Christopher Hancock (21), Trooper Mark Russell (23), Trooper John Shelton (20), Trooper Sam Smedley (20) are all serving with A Squadron of the 9th/12th Royal Lancers in Helmand Province.

Tuesday 16th August 2011 North West Wales Coroner's Office has today confirmed that the inquest into the death of a Chesterfield mum who died whilst on holiday in Gwynedd has been opened and adjourned this morning.
Tracey Screen (34) from Chesterfield was with her husband and children at a campsite in Aberafon nr Caernarfon. She was found dead in her tent - her 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were taken to hospital along with her husband. They remain there today and are said to be comfortable. Mountain Hike Brings Joy To One Chesterfield Family
Wednesday 3rd August 2011 Big hearted policeman from Chesterfield recently swapped the beat for the mountains and completed the Three Peak challenge in under 12 hours, raising over £6,000 and giving one little boy in the town a real taste of independence.
Their participation in the sponsored endurance event was designed to raise money to buy a special wheelchair for Thomas Fletcher who is a 7 year old suffering from a rare lung condition - Bronchiolitis Obliterans - meaning he will need major surgery as he grows older. Tuesday 28th June 2011 Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has today paid tribute to what he termed, "the commitment, bravery and professionalism of the town's public sector workers" after the huge Royal Hospital fire on Saturday night.
After touring the main entrance areas crippled by the fire that started in the newsagents on Saturday night, Mr Perkins praised staff who had worked tirelessly to enable the hospital to be back providing full services within 24 hours of the huge blaze starting.

Major Fire At Royal Hospital

There is a major incident at Chesterfield Royal Hospital tonight with 10 fire engines in attendance.
The first call came at 21.58pm with the Main Entrance reported as being on fire . Within half an hour 10 fire crews had been deployed from Alfreton, Ripley, Clay Cross, Bolsover and South Yorkshire also in attendance.

Forces Share Their Life With Chesterfield
Wednesday 22nd June 2011 Once again Chesterfield was today taking part in a week aimed at supporting and honouring Armed Forces connected with the town, past and present.
Eastwood Hall was packed as local residents, veterans and schoolchildren from various schools in the town gathered to meet current serving personnel and chat to veterans who had served in previous campaigns including WW2. Displays and memorabilia also took pride of place in the Hall on Rose Hill.

Climb Every Mountain
Tuesday 21st June 2011 A group of Chesterfield cops have pounded a different beat this weekend, all in aid of a seriously ill seven-year-old boy.
Derbyshire Constabulary officers, their families and friends took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday, June 18th in aid of Thomas Fletcher who has a rare form of lung disease.
The team of 27 completed the challenge, taking in the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.They all finished the hike within 12 hours raising a substantial amount... READ MORE...

Tuesday 10th May 2011 Destination Chesterfield have hosted A Champion's Breakfast, aimed at embracing the Olympics and the long-term economic effect it can have on Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

Labour Takes The Town In Election Sweep
Friday 6th May 2011 It took just 3 hours for Chesterfield Borough Council to see a seismic change in control today as voters made their mark at the polling booth, resulting in a 23 seat gain for the Labour Party, with the Lib Dems suffering losses of over 10 wards.
There were some well-known casualties amongst the Councillors with Mick Bagshaw the Deputy Mayor, Tony Rogers and Keith Falconer all falling foul of what was termed the 'Clegg Effect' by members.

Derbyshire Carers Association has over 4,500 members countywide on it's database and provides an invaluable service to those who are looking after family, friends or partners in need of fulltime care.

Stanley Dyson - His Legacy Lives On
Monday 21st March 2011 Three children aged between 8 and 11 were feted in London after winning a special art competition celebrating the life and work of a recently discovered local talent.
Readers of The Chesterfield Post will recall the exhibition held at Chesterfield Museum featuring the work of recently discovered local artist Stanley Dyson.
Stanley had taught at New Whittington Secondary School in the '50's, moving to Norfolk in later years. His works had been stored in his attic, and after his death in 2007, sold by his daughter at auction. READ MORE...
St Mary's High School Bus Crashes In Barrow Hill
Tuesday 15th March 2011 More details are now becoming known about the crash of the no 144 bus this morning as it ferried children to St Mary's High school.
The double decker hit the railway bridge on Whittington Road at around 8.30 this morning. It's not yet clear why it had taken that route where height restrictions are clearly marked. The roof of the bus was completely ripped off as it tried to travel under the low railway bridge.

Chief Executive Of Newly Merged Councils Appointed
Monday 7th March 2011 Wes Lumley has been appointed joint Chief Executive of Bolsover District Council and North East Derbyshire District Council.
Wes (53) is currently Chief Executive at Bolsover District Council, and will take up his joint role from 1st April 2011.
The Strategic Alliance between the councils will be launched on 1st April, and the partnership's first task will be to appoint joint senior managers. Monday 21st February 2011 The Royal Hospital at Calow lived up to its name on Friday as it welcomed HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The visit formed part of a tour of Derby and Staffordshire by The Duchess and HRH The Prince of Wales.

'Visionary' Councillor Is Named Council Leader Of The Year
Thursday 10th February 2011 He was the man who oversaw the transformation of a local Council in the fastest time in Local Government history and now the Leader of North East Derbyshire District Council has received the country’s top councilor honour.
Described as 'visionary' by the Head of the LGiU, Cllr Graham Baxter was declared 'Council Leader of the Year' at a London awards ceremony.
