Market Traders Speak About The Rent Freeze
Tuesday 24th January 2012 After last weeks news that Chesterfield Borough Council had decided to freeze market stall rents for the next financial year, traders on the market say they welcome the decision.
Market traders met with Councillor Nick Stringer, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism yesterday (Monday 23rd January) to hear about the Council's decision.

Council Speaks Out Over Chesterfield Market Decisions
Thursday 19th January 2012 It's described as a tourist attraction - and certainly anyone who visits Chesterfield town centre often will recognise Shire horse Ben and his cart, who regularly stand outside Marks and Spencer on the High Street.
However, due to what they say are difficult economic conditions and, in order to protect the market for the future, Councillors have taken the decision to withdraw the horse and cart from it's place on the Market.

Wednesday 21st December 2011 Street entertainment, kids' activities, prizes and a range of stalls are on offer at a series of festive-themed market events which are designed to boost the North East Derbyshire economy.

Monday 14th November 2011 It's been announced that Batman will join the Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Peter Barr, for the annual Christmas lights switch-on in Chesterfield on Sunday 20th November.

Meet The Buyer Event Offers Opportunities To Local Companies
Wednesday 2nd November 2011 Chesterfield Contractors are being given the chance to become part of the supply chain for Chesterfield Borough Council's planned renovation of Chesterfield Indoor Market Hall.
Wates Construction, the contractor behind the project, is to hold a one-day drop-in session in partnership with the council, in order to offer local companies the opportunity to find out how to register interest for the available fit-out work packages.

The Mayor Harps On For Charity
Friday 28th October 2011 Despite the dismal weather people turned out in their hundreds to take part in Day One of Chesterfield's Annual Arts and Market Festival.

Fresh New Look For Chesterfield's Market
Tuesday 18th October 2011 Chesterfield Borough Council, in partnership with Destination Chesterfield, is to give a whole new look to the town's famous outdoor market stalls.
The current stalls will be given new covers later this year to promote the Destination Chesterfield branding which is starting to appear on the town's gateways and visitor facilities.

Iconic Chesterfield Market Hall Set For Upgrade
Wednesday 12th October 2011 Chesterfield's iconic Market Hall is now one step closer to its planned refurbishment after Chesterfield Borough Council's planning committee approved the planning and listed building application.
A construction programme is now being prepared in order that work can start in February 2012.

Friday 2nd September 2011 It's strictly all for fun as Saturday 10th September sees Chesterfield's New Square Arena explode with an amazing display of dance styles with the launch of the annual 'Day of Dance'.
The event kicks off at 10.30 am and a continuous programme of dance will run right through to 3.30 pm.

In Loving Memory Of A Chesterfield Legend
Thursday 25th August 2011 One of Chesterfield's most famous faces (and voices) will be laid to rest tomorrow. He died last Thursday after a long illness, aged 80, and leaves two sons.
Roy Purcell Davidson, more commonly known as 'The Pound A Bag Man' was found most days, whatever the weather, outside his shop 'Davidson's Cheese Factor' and was well known and loved by residents and tourists of the town alike.

Market Hall Funding Now Approved

Chesterfield Borough Council's cabinet has this week approved the funding for the £4million refurbishment of the town’s Market Hall.
The funding package includes £2.1 million of European and Lottery grant with the remaining money coming from the Council.

The 'Marketing the Markets' campaign that was organised by NE Derbyshire District Council featured street entertainment, kids' activities, free raffles and a range of stalls. Monday 11th April 2011 The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield were present this week to welcome a record breaking coach into the town.
The official welcome for the tourists from Alford, Lincs, was to mark the record-breaking number of coaches now coming to the town, a number that had topped that the 478 visiting in 2010/11.

The shoppers of Chesterfield have voted, and, in a closely fought contest, have crowned their Market Retailer of the Year.
Holding onto their title of 'Favourite Market Stall' for a 2nd year was Ibbotsons for the outdoor market and the 'Favourite Market Hall Retailer' award went to the delighted new owners of Fred's Haberdashery.

Market Cleans Up
Thursday 17th March 2011 Chesterfield market traders have signed a new agreement with Chesterfield Borough Council to work together in keeping the town's market clean and tidy.
The town's Markets Consultative Committee, which represents the market traders in the town, has signed the agreement that details the responsibilities of the Council and the traders to maintain a clean market.

Market Rates Frozen
Monday 14th March 2011 Chesterfield Borough Council has today announced that, in recognition of their value to the town, there is to be no rent increase for the town's market stalls.
The rent freeze will apply to the General and Flea markets, Farmers' Markets and the Sunday Car Boot Sale as council officials say they are pivotal to the financial prosperity of the town.

Students from local schools are preparing to take part in the North Derbyshire Young Enterprise Trade Fair on Thursday 3rd March. The Fair, hosted by Chesterfield Market, takes place in New Square between 10am and 4pm.

Warning To Chesterfield Motorists

A warning today from Police in Chesterfield that they are clamping down on motorists using pedestrian areas in the town centre.
Officers from the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team are reminding motorists of parking and other restrictions in both the Market Place and Rykneld Square.

Market Fun Day A Success
Friday 18th February 2011 A family fun day took place at Clay Cross , one of a series of events aimed at getting local residents to love their local market.
Balloon modelling, free fairground rides, face painting, entertainment from the Young Inspirations Theatre Company and a great range of stalls were just some of the attractions on offer. Monday 31st January 2011 "They're Valuable Assets", says Cllr Pat Kerry from NE Derbyshire District Council as she encourages local people to shop at local markets in the region.

Wednesday 8th December 2010 Chesterfield's Flea Market will be back on as normal tomorrow after the terrible weather conditions saw it cancelled last week.
The snow and ice hit the markets hard and caused huge disruption, particularly last Thursday and Friday. The Market Hall too was affected as traders struggled to get in. Markets Manager, Andy Bond says that they're hoping for a better week telling us, "We're looking to get back to some normality from tomorrow (Thursday) - a lot of the Traders have been snowed in at their homes and unable to get their vans out. Many of them have noted how bad Chesterfield is compared to where they come from. It really is the worst time for them at the moment - as with all retailers, Xmas carries them through the lean months of Jan, Feb and March." He added that they were hoping the worst was now over, saying, "Hopefully things are improving and trade will bounce back!"

Arts And Crafts Market Adds Brightness To Lights Switch On
Wednesday 17th November 2010 A new Arts and Craft market is setting up for this year's Christmas lights switch-on event in Chesterfield. Over 20 local artists and craftspeople will be exhibiting and selling their work on the main market in the town from 12noon until 6pm on Sunday 21st November.

The Cotton for Cotton exchange which took place on Saturday 13th November, which aimed to encourage recycling and shopping locally has been deemed a huge success despite the weather this week.
We popped along on Saturday morning where Markets Manager Andy Bond and Markets Assistant Jenny Salt were manning the stall and they told us that they were worried they may not have enough given the demand so far that morning.

Parade Lights Up Chesterfield
Monday 1st November 2010 Samba dancers, The Mayor and Mayoress, Panto Dame and villain along with many home made lanterns all gathered in front of a illuminated Crooked Spire.
Not then your average Saturday night in Chesterfield town centre but, in fact, one of many events organised to celebrate the Market Festival weekend.

He told us "I'm here to promote the Market Festival and been impressed with how massive this market is, I've been to loads of markets with my shows - buying stuff from abroad to bring home and sell at places like this, none were as big as this - it's a wonderfully nice place to stop. Monday 11th October 2010 "It's the heart of the town!" That's Markets Manager Andy Bond on the market held in Chesterfield four days a week.
Andy has fond memories of the Market Place, having worked there himself as a teenager. After spending some time working in retail away from the town, he saw the job for Manager advertised and jumped at the chance to return to work there again.

Football Fever Amongst Market Traders
Monday 20th September 2010 Chesterfield Market Traders donned their football boots for charity and raised £250 for CLIC Sargent Cancer Charity.
The traders, from both the indoor and outdoor markets, came third in a twelve team Charity Football Tournament at Dronfield Rugby Club. The event was organised by Tesco Metro in aid of the Cancer Charity which is their chosen charity for the year and was a real family day. READ MORE...
