Pilgrims Progress As Spireites Stumble. Match Report

Wednesday 17th April 2013

Pilgrims Progress As Spireites Stumble. Match ReportIt was the first visit to the Proact by Plymouth Argyle and the first time former Sprieites Boss John Sheridan had returned to the ground where he had overseen a Championship and JPT winning side.

With Chesterfield still chasing the play offs and Plymouth looking to retain their league status next year, both sides had it all to play for and a tough game was expected.

It proved to be the former Chesterfield Gaffer who triumphed on the night, with a first half which saw an organised Pilgrims side dominate play with Joe Bryan then Curtis Nelson scoring within 4 minutes of each other, to give the visitors a two goal advantage at half time.

HT: 0-2

No substitutions were made by Paul Cook at half time and the Spireites did come out in fighting spirit, creating a couple of early chances - notably an effort from Conor Townsend which came to nothing.

Paul Cook attempted to freshen things up on 55, bringing on Armand Gnanduillet for Marc Richards and Alex Henshall replacing Richard Brindley and, just one minute later, Chesterfield had pulled back a goal - though it was Plymouth's Guy Branston who netted after deflecting a ball by Henshall.

1-2

Cook again shuffled the pack on 72 when Sam Hird came on for Neal Trotman but it was not to be the Spireites' evening and the three points travelled back down to Plymouth.

FT: 1-2

After the game, a visibly shaken Spireites boss, and frustrated Paul Cook faced the press and said that he felt players - hadn't turned upAfter the game, a visibly shaken and frustrated Paul Cook (left) faced the press and said that he felt players "hadn't turned up", adding, "It was looking like an end of season game for us that we had nothing to play for!"

He went on, "It was the biggest game of our season by a million miles and our players knew that - and they didn't turn up."

John Sheridan however was delighted with his teams performance, saying, "I thought we played really well and it was a well deserved victory - the first half I thought we were outstanding."

Chesterfield now sit in 9th place in League Two and look ahead to a trip to Fleetwood on Saturday.
