England 2 - 0 Germany! Somersall Rangers U12s Set The 'Euro' Standard

Tuesday 12th June 2012

Somersall Rangers U12s team set the standard for England to aim for at the Euros, by beating 2 German teams in their own back yard.

As an end of season treat for the boys - having won their Sheffield & District League Division F championship this season without dropping a single point - last week they went on a 5 day tour out of Valkenburg in Holland, taking in 2 friendlies with German sides over the weekend, winning the first game 5-2 (nearly matching another famous England-Germany result...) and the second 3-0.

The first game was played in beautiful sunny weather in the town of Lichtenbusch against SC Grün-Weiß

The first game was played in beautiful sunny weather in the town of Lichtenbusch against SC Grün-Weiß (above) where the team was welcomed with open arms by one of their coaches, Jan Buchsteiner. Jan said they were 'honoured' to play an English team and had even cancelled a league fixture in order to play the match.

Somersall put the Grün-Weiß defence under pressure

There were a few 14 year olds in the German side and a few 13 year olds for Somersall (they commonly play teams with a 2 year age spread in Europe). Somersall took just a short time to settle in on the 3G pitch - and soon found their passing game was too much for the opposition, going in 3-0 up at half time.

A closer second half saw the German side pull a goal back, Somersall scored one in response, followed by another German goal setting the score up nicely at 4-2! However, the boys weren't to be denied and wrecked the chance of an iconic scoreline with another goal, finishing the game off 5-2.

A Barbeque and drinks in the boys' honour followed, along with an exchange of gifts ending a great day and unforgettable experience.

The second game was held in very different weather! Sideways rain, biting cold and a smaller pitch combined to make it a much more difficult prospect, against a team that was 2 divisions above SC Grün-Weiß. Somersall weathered the storm however and played excellent football again to take the honours with a 3-0 win. Unfortunately, there was less time to meet and mingle with their opponents during this game, but the boys deserved their victory regardless.

So Somersall returned from Germany unbeaten - a fitting end to their season and indeed for the team itself - as the club officially announces they will be playing as Staveley MWFC U13s for the coming 2012/13 season, having merged into the junior ranks of the forward-thinking Baris NCEL Premier Division club out of Inkersall Road.

Congratulations to the boys on both counts and we look forward to seeing more trophies being brought back to grace the cabinets of one of our local footballing successes.
