Monday 8th October 2012

This week traders from Chesterfield's Market Hall will begin moving into their temporary accommodation in preparation for the Hall’s major refurbishment project.

The traders are setting-up shop in the temporary Market Hall structure in New Square Arena whilst the £3.6m improvements are made to the town's indoor market area.

The 300 square metre temporary structure will open on Monday 15th October and will accommodate 14 of the affected Market Hall traders. The existing internal Market Hall will close on Thursday 11th October and is scheduled to reopen in September 2013.

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: "We appreciate this is a substantial upheaval for our traders but it is necessary whilst the building work is carried out on the Market Hall.  We're more than happy with the temporary Market Hall structure - and its prominence in the town centre will hopefully continue to attract shoppers during the refurbishment period and traders will continue to thrive."

Tara Kreeger of Venus Footwear said: I must admit, we were a bit worried about what the temporary Market Hall was going to look like, but I think it's a terrific solution.

Traders who are located on the exterior of the Market Hall will remain open during the whole construction phase.

Construction work begins on Monday 15th October with Derby-based G F Tomlinson as the appointed contractors. Traders who are located on the exterior of the Market Hall will remain open during the whole construction phase.  Three traders - Unit 34 Barbers and Hodkins and Elliots Butchers have relocated to Council shops on South Street.

The Cheese Factory relocated with the Council's assistance to a vacant shop on the North side of the Market Hall and Country Crop has set up trading from the external Market on the south side of the Market Hall.
