Derbyshire Falcons v Durham Dynamos Friends Life T20
Derbyshire 136-7 (20 overs)
Durham 137-6 (18.5 overs)
Durham (2pts) won by 4 wickets

Derbyshire's T20 Campaign is hanging by a thread as Durham won at Queen's Park with an over to spare, thanks to Durham's Ben Stokes and Gordon Muchall, whose partnership of 77 in 8 overs tipped the balance in favour of the Dynamos.

Derbyshire
had posted a competitive score of 136 after being asked to bat, but you felt it was under par on a wicket which accepted spin.

Queen's Park had seen over 1,000 runs scored on it during the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket week in the hot sun, but the cloudy conditions meant that if you won the toss, you fielded.

Although it didn't start according to plan when Chesney Hughes - who ran out skipper Wayne Madsen last week against Yorkshire - was guilty of miscommunication with Wes Durston this week.

Hughes played the ball to mid-off and set off leaving Durston no chance to get back.

Dan Redfern quickly followed, bowled by Will Smith.

Chesney Hughes then formed a good partnership with Wayne Madsen (32) - the pair putting on 43 for the third wicket - before Hughes was bowled by Chris Rushworth (below) for 32.

Albie Morkel
couldn't quite pull off the same amount of power hitting as he did last week versus Yorkshire, however he certainly gave the ball a fair whack in a cameo innings of 25 from 18 balls.

One of Morkel's two sixes worried cars on Boythorpe Avenue, such was its ferocity. But the South African tried one too many a big shot and flayed one high into the air, which was caught by Durham Captain Mark Stoneman.

Wayne Madsen went very next ball when he was bowled by Ryan Pringle.

Tom Poynton joined Richard Johnson and they pushed the score along before Johnson top-edged to Michael Stoneman.

A bit of a mix-up by Poynton and Burgoyne saw Stokes throw the stumps down at the non strikers end to leave Poynton well short of his ground.

Groenewald joined Burgoyne and Derbyshire squeezed 11 from the last over to post 136.

Derbyshire
kept it tight at the start of Durham's reply with the first four overs only going for 13 and included the wicket of Mark Stoneman, who was leg before to Burgoyne.

Phil Mustard is always a key wicket in limited overs cricket and, despite hitting the first two balls of the fifth over to the boundary, he was out when he was clean bowled by Albie Morkel.

At the end of the 7th over, Tom Knight had Scott Borthwick stumped by Poynton and Dan Redfern picked up a wicket with his very first ball when he had Will Smith leg before - and Durham were in all sorts of trouble at 36-4.

Ben Stokes (46) so often touted as a possible England all rounder showed the class that he has when in partnership with Gordon Muchall (37).

Stokes took a particular liking to Peter Burgoyne in the 12th over, hitting the 19 year old for two sixes. He then followed this up by hitting Tim Groenewald, Mark Turner and Wes Durston all for maximums, before Durston had his revenge when Stokes holed out to Chesney Hughes on the long on boundary.

Muchall had played a supplement role to Stokes but decided to join the party with a big six off Durston, but yet again Wes had his revenge, this time, Muchall tried to play the big shot and he did the same as Stokes and was caught, this time by Mark Turner.

The damage had been done, Durham found themselves way ahead of the rate as Derbyshire needed to take the remaining four wickets.

Durham required just 21 off the last four overs, but they only need three of them, when Michael Richardson cleared the fence from a no ball by Tim Groenewald to win the match.

Post match, Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen felt that there were a couple of turning points which changed the match in Durham's favour.

One of those was the dismissal of Madsen himself, "Albie and I both getting out was a key point.

"I got out just at the wrong time. (pictured above) We had a good couple of overs but we just couldn't stay in, plus we had them 38 for four, but Ben Stokes and Gordon Muchall took the game away from us.

"We had a couple of chances, although they were tough, but chances are chances and in this form of the game, they are important."

Albie Morkel, who had played well with the bat with 25 from 18 balls, including one four and two sixes, limped off after bowling two overs and Madsen was concerned but will wait to see how the injury is, "Potentially, it's a real concern, your main player as well, and he's only got one game left to play which is Tuesday versus Nottinghamshire, it may take 24 hours to settle down but it's a concern."

Derbyshire have lost their last four matches in this competition and Madsen was quick to point out that apart from the Nottinghamshire match at Derby the defeats have been close, "The Yorkshire one was close, but that's T20 cricket, it's very fine lines between the two, we lost the Yorkshire game due to silly cricket but this one was taken away from us and that's fair enough."
