Sporting Talent In Schools Recognised At DSSA Sports Awards

Teams from Glebe Junior School and Ashgate Croft School were among the winners at the 2012 Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association Sports Awards.

Sporting Talent In Schools Recognised At DSSA Sports AwardsThe event, organised by the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association (DSSA), recognised pupils who have achieved county, regional, national or international success in school sport, with a number of individual and team awards presented in front of an audience of 200 guests.

The event, held at The Proact Stadium in Chesterfield on Thursday, October 4th, also saw several young promising sport stars presented with John Bainbridge Award Grants of £50 each.

The Primary School Team of the Year award was presented to the Y5/Y6 Mini Soccer Team from Glebe Junior School in South Normanton. The team made it through to district, county and regional events before representing the Midlands at the National Finals.

The Disability Team of the Year award was presented to the Boccia Team from Ashgate Croft School in Chesterfield. The team competed at inter and intra school level, before going on to compete at district level and then representing Chesterfield at the Derbyshire Summer School Games. The team took third place at the Summer Games and also won the Fair Play award.

The winner of the Primary School Sportsperson of the Year award was Kelsie Geary from Sharley Park Primary School in Chesterfield. 11-year-old Kelsie is a talented runner and swimmer. She won the North East Derbyshire District Girls Primary Cross Country, and won a gold medal, four silver and a bronze at this year's Derbyshire County Championships. She qualified for the British Schools National Biathlon finals where she finished 11th out of 68, having gained personal best times in both her 500m run and 50m swim.

Awards were also presented who a number of young people who have achieved sporting success whilst at school but not as a result of the school sport system.

The joint winners in the Individual Achievement - Non-school sport category were squash player Ashley Davies, (pictured above) from Chesterfield's Brookfield Community School; and cyclist Sam Lowe from Chellaston Academy in Derby.

Ashley was selected for the England World Junior Championships squad, and was the runner-up in the Dutch Junior Open. He won the Swedish, British and Belgian U17 national titles, and became the first British player to make the British Junior Open boys U17 final since 2006.

Ashley was selected to play for England in the European Championships in March, but was unable to compete due to injury. He was also selected for the World Junior Individual and Team Championships, but was again unable to compete due to a second injury.

Sam has represented Great Britain in a number of major competitions including World and European Championships. He won the U18 National Junior Road Race Championships, and a further three national titles. He was the 2011 European Team Pursuit Champion, and took third place in the European Junior Scratch Race and second place in the 2012 European Team Pursuit.

The evening also saw John Bainbridge Award Grants of £50 each presented to some of the county's most promising young sports stars.

Tom Craig (Mountain Biking) - Hope Valley College, Hope
Abbie Milwain (Table Tennis) - Chellaston Academy, Derby

The grants are awarded annually in memory of John Bainbridge, who died of a heart attack in 2004 aged 51. John was head of sport and recreation at Wilsthorpe Community School in Long Eaton and played a leading role in setting up the Derbyshire Schools' Sports Association Sports Awards.

Karen Shopland, Chair of DSSA, said: "My congratulations go to all of this year's nominees. 2012 has been a fantastic year for sport, and it's great to see so much talent in Derbyshire's schools and such enthusiasm for sport."

The awards evening was opened with a performance by former Chellaston Academy pupil Elisha Cooper, who sang Read All About It by Emeli Sandé.

Olympic Torchbearer and former Brookfield Community School pupil Oliver Hooper was the guest speaker, and guests also heard from Chris Cohen CBE who was Athletics Paralympics Manager for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and also Competition Director for Athletics at both the Olympics and Paralympics.
