Sometimes, It's NOT Good To Talk...

Thursday August 26th 2010

Police in NE Derbyshire are warning members of the public to be vigilant against suspicious telephone calls.

The warning comes after a woman from Dronfield received two calls on Monday August 23, from a person claiming to be from a call centre in India telling her that she must pay £19 to stop unwanted calls.

After being asked for her bank details and refusing, the householder put the phone down. She was told by her phone company that they had received several similar calls from customers and advised her to report the incident to police.

Safer Neighbourhoods officer PC Heather Brown said, "Bogus callers can often sound knowledgeable and sincere to convince vulnerable members of the community to hand over credit card or bank details. Members of the public must be vigilant against these callers and report any such calls to the police."

Police offer the following advice:

  • Never give out personal details or bank account details over the phone.
  • Always ask for more information.
  • Be sure you know who you're talking to - ask for a company number and say you will call them back to see if they are genuine.
  • If in doubt put the phone down.

To report any suspicious telephone calls or if you would like to speak to your local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team call 0345 123 3333.
