Mosquito Device Ends Anti-Social Behaviour At Chesterfield
Community Centre

Tuesday 31st August 2010

Derbyshire Police report that after an anti-loitering device was fitted in an area of Chesterfield which had been plagued by youths, anti-social behaviour has been reduced by 25 per cent.

A 'Mosquito' device, which emits an irritating sound which can only be heard by the under 25's, was installed at St Francis Community Hall, Hunloke Avenue, after an increasing number of calls to police about nuisance youths gathering there.

During May and June police received 42 calls from concerned residents about rowdy youths congregating and playing football outside the community hall. After a visit from Chesterfield Crime Reduction Officer PC Russ Smith, the Mosquito device was installed on July 18. It was paid for by Derbyshire Police.

Since then just two calls relating to nuisance behaviour near the community hall have been made to Police.

Community Safety Sergeant Michael Burton said: "During May and June there was almost one call per day from residents who were fed up with rowdy youths congregating on their street and it was becoming a big community concern.

"Anti-social behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated so we looked at what we could do to find a solution that was beneficial to everyone. We are pleased with the feedback from the community who say they have seen a big improvement.

"We welcome calls from residents about community issues as they enable us to identify and target the problem."

Mosquito devices have been used to good effect in other areas of Chesterfield including the shops around Moorland View Road, Walton.

The noise emitted by the device is extremely annoying to young people who disperse within minutes of hearing it.

Due to presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) people over 25 cannot detect the sound of the Mosquito.

If you are experiencing anti-social behaviour in your neighbourhood report it to your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team on 0345 123 3333.
