The Paul Cook Interview - "We're A Point Nearer Where We Want To Be!"

Thursday 6th March 2014

It will be familiar territory for Paul Cook on Saturday when his Chesterfield side make the journey to Accrington Stanley.

Cook knows exactly who they are, having been both player and manager at The Crown Ground - whilst Spireites' Assistant boss Leam Richardson left his job at Accrington in the Summer to come to serve at the PROACT with his former gaffer.

Having won a home point on Monday when Portsmouth came to town in front of the Sky TV cameras, Cook was philosophical about the 0-0 draw, "I thought it was a good game, a tactical game between two teams and it became a bit of a stand off but, you have to move on and it's a point nearer to where we want to be."

He did concede that changes were likely in the upcoming games, "Freshness is huge - they all offer different qualities. What is our strongest team? It's always good when you can split an argument on that."

On the injury front, the gaffer confirmed Jay O'Shea now looks to be clear of his back injury, Drew Talbot is still out but likely to return mid MarchOn the injury front, the gaffer confirmed Jay O'Shea (left), now looks to be clear of his back injury, Drew Talbot is still out but likely to return mid March. Cook also admitted that Gary Roberts had missed training this morning (Thursday) after picking up a dead leg in the second half of the game against Pompey.

Cook confirmed that he be like to extend the loans (due to expire this weekend) of Matty Brown and Aaron Chapman at Chester, "I would like them to play, I don't want to bring them back to not play - playing under someone else can bring you forward."

With only 12 games left this campaign, Cook isn't underestimating Accrington, who hover one place above the relegation zone, "They're all tough games! There's a balance to our results, we go through certain periods of winning games, certain periods of drawing - we have though, never disrespected the opposition, we have to go there on Saturday and be as professional as we can be.

"It's a tough place to go! You can't get too much as to what you expect [sic], Portsmouth changed completely - Accrington will set up however they see fit - we'll go there focused. Training was good this morning."

With young manager James Beattie at the helm, Accrington have held their own this season in SkyBet League Two, a fact which Cook is quick to recognise, "It's a tough job managing. James has gone in there - he's a young manager and it's a great job to start there, it's a great club, with great people who work there. We wish him well - but not on Saturday!"
