Spireites Make A Point Against The Dons. Match Report

Wednesday 12th March 2014

Chesterfield picked up what could be a valuable point on the road last night - after coming from behind at Wimbledon to draw 1-1.

Paul Cook had asked for a response after Saturday's loss to former club Accrington Stanley and he made two changes to that sidePaul Cook
(left), had asked for a response after Saturday's loss to former club Accrington Stanley and he made two changes to that side, bringing in Eoin Doyle and Jay O'Shea for Dan Gardner (who picked up an ankle injury during Saturday's match) and Armand Gnanduiilet.

New boy Danny Kearns, who had been brought in from Peterborough just in time to take part in the game, took his place on the bench.

Chesterfield players had clearly received the gaffer's memo, with Doyle striking hard within a minute, but Worner squarely caught his attempt. 5 minutes later, Wimbledon had their first real chance, but Liam Cooper was on hand to block a shot from Hylton.

The Rotherham United loanee continued to be a thorn in Chesterfield's side, as both sides battled to find that opening goal - with the Wimbledon player having chance after chance denied by Tommy Lee.

Despite having more of the possession, the Spireites could not capitalise and neither side had an advantage going in to the break.

HT: 0-0

After making no changes at half time, Cook could only watch from the sidelines as, with just four minutes of the second 45 gone, Francomb hit a left footed shot past Lee to put the home side ahead.

1-0

Chesterfield were down but not out and, just five minutes later, Ollie Banks equalised for ChesterfieldChesterfield were down but not out and, just five minutes later, Ollie Banks (left), equalised for Chesterfield, after Jimmy Ryan's cross was mishit by Worner and Banks pounced.

1-1

Chesterfield's leveller appeared to have the desired effect - with the Spireites galvanised into action and applying the most pressure going forward.

New recruit Danny Kearns made his debut in a blue shirt on 65, coming on after Jimmy Ryan left the field with what looked to be an injury, but was later confirmed by Cook as a need to go to the toilet!

Cook shuffled his pack again on 76, this time bringing on Marc Richards for O'Shea and, with Chesterfield still dominating possession, it looked likely that they would score the decider.

The clock ticked down however and the Spireites ended with the draw.

FT: 1-1

Although Chesterfield came home with just the one point, Southend held Scunthorpe to a draw, which means they remain top of SkyBet League two going into Saturday's game against Oxford.
