Derbyshire overseas player Usman Khawaja misses the LV = County Championship opener against Gloucestershire with a thigh strain.

Usman Khawaja faces a short lay off due to a thigh strainThe Australian international is being monitored by the Derbyshire medical staff and is expected back in action soon.

Khawaja is fulfilling Derbyshire's overseas player position for the opening half of the season, culminating in playing alongside New Zealand's Martin Guptill during the Friends Life t20 campaign.

Derbyshire Head of Cricket John Morris said: "It is a blow to lose Usman for the start of the season but we are significantly relieved that his layoff will not be a lengthy one.

"I feel for the player because he has been looking forward to this stint in County Cricket immensely and it must be very difficult for him not to be involved.

"Once this injury is healed it will be great for our members, supporters and Usman's team mates to finally see him in action in a Derbyshire shirt."
