ChestFest

Despite the mixed weather hundreds of young people gathered in Chesterfield's Queen's Park at the weekend for Chestfest.

The music and arts event, organised by Derbyshire County Council's Youth Services team in conjunction with Donut Creative Arts Studio provided free entertainment along with safety messages about alcohol use for kids 11-19 years old.

Organisations including Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership, Connexions, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and the Police set up interactive displays based around the theme of safety with youngsters challenged to find a key, get it in the door and unlock it whilst wearing 'beer goggles'!

They were also asked whether they thought that people pictured on the Community Safety Partnership's website should be asked for ID by pubs and clubs.

Young people aged over 15 were also offered the chance to be screened for Chlamydia by Derbyshire Sexual Health Promotion Service's Well Sexy team.

Musicians performing in the park's bandstand included Aqua Blakk, Backstage Riot, Jack Mack and Undone.

A chance to try circus skills, watch and have a go at street dancing and to enjoy food being cooked on site by the Asian Association of Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire was also on offer.

Town Centre Youth Worker Louise Brewer, key organiser of Chesterfest, said, "We are really pleased with the way it went. Plenty of people came, stayed and seemed to enjoy themselves.

"The organisations who took part tell us that young people did engage with them and their activities and it was useful to them in getting across important messages about drinking alcohol."
