The Archbishop Of Canterbury Reflects On Visit To Derbyshire

Monday 27th June 2016

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said his three day visit to Derbyshire to see the work carried out in the diocese had been both 'very moving and deeply impressive.'

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said his three day visit to Derbyshire to see the work carried out in the diocese had been both 'very moving and deeply impressive.'

With 23 different events packed into his three days travelling around Derby diocese with Bishop Alastair Redfern, he also said it had been "incredibly busy!"

Archbishop Justin Welby (above), said: "We've gone from the far north to the far south of the diocese. I've learnt a huge amount about the energy of the diocese and particularly about partnership and its skills in people drawing together in some of the areas of greatest need. It's been very moving and deeply impressive."

He highlighted the modern day slavery conference at Derby University, the open air baptisms in Glossop and the renewal of churches such as St Thomas' in Normanton, as his stand out moments.

Ending Modern Day Slavery Together, held at Derby University on Thursday 23rd June, saw companies such as JCB, Pennine Healthcare, Staffline and Bowmer Kirkland sign up to the UN Athens Declaration to eradicate slavery from their supply chains.

The open air baptisms in Glossop followed an entertaining evening with young people putting the Archbishop through his paces with all sorts of questions on doubt, faith and creation. Hundreds watched on as the Archbishop, complete in waders, carried out three full immersion baptisms.

The chance to see the revival and renewal at St Thomas' Church, Pear Tree Road in Normanton - brought back from the brink of closure - was "so exciting", added the Archbishop.

His last stop was a surprise visit to a retreat to drop in on the candidates due to be ordained at Derby Cathedral on Sunday (below).

He said: "It was hugely encouraging to meet men and women who have responded to God's call to ordained ministry. I pray that the God who raised Jesus from the dead will strengthen and renew their vocations for the flourishing of every part of the Church of England."

Bishop of Derby, Alastair Redfern, when asked about the visit of the Archbishop, said: "It's been inspirational! His ability to gather people together and to engage in all sorts of different contexts, whether it's taking a school assembly or or tackling a big issue like modern slavery.

"He's very gifted and helps people to think a bit more deeply and with a bit more faith and hope. He's passionate about people and it's been a privilege to have him here with us for these three days."

The Archbishop carries out two to three pastoral visits to dioceses a year, where he has a chance to witness the mission and ministry going on and to encourage them in their work.
