Six Men Arrested On Suspicion Of
Taxi Driver Assault

Friday 17th September 2010
Police have arrested six men after a taxi driver was assaulted in a lay-by.

The 36-year-old driver picked up a group of men from Chesterfield town centre but they became abusive towards him as he drove along the A617 at Heath at around 12.50am today (Friday, September 17).

He pulled into a lay-by to call police and the group allegedly assaulted him, punching him several times to the head before running off.

The force helicopter was deployed to search for the group, directing officers on the ground to the suspects. Six men were detained within a 25-minute period.

Four of the men, aged 19, 21 and two aged 20, are from Shirebrook, one 19-year-old is from Glapwell while another 19-year-old is from Mansfield.

The taxi driver, who is from Sheffield, was taken to hospital in Chesterfield with swelling to his head.

The six men remain in custody and are being questioned by officers.
