The Paul Cook Interview - Chesterfield's Penultimate Game Beckons

Friday 25th April 2014

It's the last away trip for The Spireites this weekend - and with just two points separating them from top placed Scunthorpe, it's very much 'game on' in respect of both promotion and even the Championship.

It's the last away trip for The Spireites this weekend - and with just two points separating them from top placed Scunthorpe, it’'s very much 'game on' in respect of both promotion and even the Championship.

However, with next week's opponents Fleetwood coming up on the rails, Gaffer Paul Cook (above), says caution remains and asserts that the squad is taking nothing for granted as they approach the penultimate game of the campaign.

He confirmed that, with Morsy out through suspension for the remainder of the season, there are few injuries to consider - with only Ollie Banks unavailable for selection. Drew Talbot has trained this week and is likely to figure on the bench. Tommy Lee and Gary Roberts have trained all week and Gary has looked really bright and Cook says, "I'm sure by the time the dust settles on the last two games, Gary Roberts will have had a huge part to play, they're big game players."

The finishing line is in sight, "There are 4 teams fighting for 3 places, we just have to keep going. The likelihood is that if Sunday goes really badly, then we'll have a home game to get us promoted, we can't ask for much more than that! We've put ourselves in a strong position - we just have to keep going."

The league has been tight, and Cook told The Chesterfield Post, "I thought the run we've been on the last 6 games would see us up, but Fleetwood have put together a run that's better than ours and that's what the game's about, they'll make it difficult for everyone."

The mood is upbeat and players are ready for the task ahead, "There's never many problems in training, they have a great work ethic. They're bright, good players and we have a lot of experienced lads, we're not as bad as some people will have us."

Loan players, such as Jamie Devitt and Matty Brown will not be returning before the end of the season says the boss, "The lads who've gone away have done well by playing regularly and I feel it wouldn't be right to bring them back to sit on the bench. I feel we have all areas covered and we're looking forward to the game."

Sunday's opponents, Burton, took three points from Chesterfield when they visited the PROACT, and Cook concedes that they are not to be underestimated, "Burton are a good side - strong, with a young manager who's doing well with a bright future in the game. I saw them last week and it was as good a League Two performance I've seen. They have great balance to the team. It's a game I'm not looking forward to and that's not being disrespectful. Any game at Burton is a tough game."

Cooks target is simple, "There are 4 teams chasing 3 places. If we can take heavy points in the next two games then we'd like to give ourselves the chance to be Champions. People are quick to think it will be Fleetwood that'll miss out - but Scunthorpe are not mathematically safe. At the end of the season, the table will say who's gone up and who hasn't and the other team will have to take their chance in the playoffs."
