Is John Sheridan The Man To Lead Chesterfield Back To The EFL?

Wednesday 19th June 2019

A run of nine wins from Chesterfield's final 16 league games of 2018-19 has increased hopes that the club - too big for National League level - can assemble a strong promotion push next season.

Is John Sheridan the man to lead the Spireites back into the EFL? We discuss here.

Is John Sheridan (above) the man to lead the Spireites back into the EFL?

We discuss here.

His Association With The Club

John Sheridan certainly has a natural connection with Chesterfield. He has strong personal roots to the area and is now in his second managerial spell in charge of the club.

Last time he worked at the Proact stadium, he led the club to the League Two title in 2010-11. They were relegated the following season, ironically defeating Swindon to reach the EFL Trophy that same year.

In the National League, it can be advantageous to have a club legend at the helm.

John Askey led Macclesfield to top spot in 2017-18 despite huge financial handicaps, Martin Allen steered Barnet to the title in 2014-15.

Fans at that level of football rely on an emotional connection with their club. That is heightened if the man in charge is somebody they can relate to.

The Squad

Although Chesterfield finished 14th last season, their squad contains plenty of EFL pedigree.

Goalkeeper Shwan Jalal has played 146 times for Bournemouth whilst Haydn Hollis, who came through Notts County's academy, provides strong leadership qualities.

Jonathan Smith had a lot of success with Luton, whom he inspired to the National League title in 2013-14 through his composure and discipline.

To partner Smith, Chesterfield have two contenders for a more combative role in Curtis Weston, a mainstay when Barnet went up four years ago, or Robbie Weir, who had been a central part of Burton Albion’s rise up the divisions.

The Spireites have goalscorers, too. Tom Denton is strong in the air while the more poacher-like Scott Boden bagged 21 National League goals last season, including his pre-January spell at Gateshead.

Liam Mandeville (above), an enigmatic forward who was part of Doncaster’s promotion from League Two in 2016-17, should excel in the fifth tier.

Liam Mandeville (above), an enigmatic forward who was part of Doncaster's promotion from League Two in 2016-17, should excel in the fifth tier.

Chesterfield do, though, look short of pace and width. It could be important for them to find somebody in the Zavon Hines mould who can stretch play when things become too congested centrally.

However, that can easily be added on loan and the Spireites are 10/1 with Betway as of 17th June to secure top spot next term.

His Firefighting Mentality

Over the last half-decade, Sheridan has taken over at Newport, Oldham, Oldham again then Fleetwood and steered all those clubs to safety with relative comfort.

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has an approach to management that is conducive to success when walking into a relegation battle.

He enforces tight organisation, he likes two banks of four (although he compromised that slightly at Fleetwood), he drills into his players what is required of them out of possession.

He goes into a lot of games with a clean sheet being the primary target, much like a lower league equivalent of Tony Pulis.

However, the last time Sheridan was given a blank sheet of paper at a club and asked to build progressively, he struggled hugely: his Notts County reign lasted just seven months, sacked for alleged gross misconduct after a run of nine consecutive defeats.

That’s not to say that one bad spell should define him as a manager, but it could be questioned whether he still has the adaptability to handle different situations, different characters and make a reign last as well as he did at Plymouth.

The Board

Since Paul Cook left in the summer of 2015, shortly after the defeat to Preston in the League One Play-Offs, Chesterfield have declined rapidly.

Dean Saunders pledged more variation in the Spireites' play but the experiment did not work

Dean Saunders (above), pledged more variation in the Spireites' play but the experiment did not work; although replacement Danny Wilson succeeded in keeping them up in 2015-16, he was dismissed the following season with the team languishing in the relegation zone.

On paper, Gary Caldwell was a good appointment having recently guided Wigan to the League One title and been unfortunate to lose his job in West Lancashire, but the Northern Irishman perhaps lacked the charisma to win the affection of Spireites fans.

Caldwell oversaw the confirmation of relegation and was dismissed two months into the following campaign. Jack Lester was then appointed in the hope that a sentimental move could galvanise the club, but he then left in 2017-18 with Chesterfield dropping out of the EFL.

Like the appointments of Wilson and Caldwell, the move for Martin Allen made sense on paper, but a six-game losing run over Autumn ended any hopes of an instant return prematurely.

The Chesterfield board should take responsibility for the ill-advised moves for Saunders and Lester, but it is difficult to argue with their other managerial appointments - and question marks over investment have not been applicable to the last two seasons.

The key factors behind the club's decline, therefore, must be a lack of transparency, a lack of care, poor recruitment and poor decision-making off-the-field.

Can Sheridan arrest the slide and bring Chesterfield back into the EFL? Time will tell - but he's certainly had a positive start.
