The Royal Goes Global

Monday 7th March 2011

After conquering Facebook, the Chesterfield Royal Hospital has now reached another social networking milestone with its 1,000th YouTube viewing.

Now having close to 4,000 Facebook friends the Royal has branched out further , delivering a range of its facilities and health information visually across twelve online videos.

The channel was created at the start of the year and already includes tours of the Chesterfield and Darley Birth Centres, the main entrance, the Advice Centre and news pieces on the Royal visits by the Countess of Wessex and Duchess of Cornwall.

There are also a number of information videos about flu, including what to do if you get it and who needs to be vaccinated, and norovirus.

Sarah Turner-Saint, Head of Communications at the hospital said, "With the success of our Facebook page and the way we're able to interact with the community, we wanted to further explore how we can use social media to spread health messages.

"We host videos on our own website, but YouTube opens them up to a much wider audience and we're able to use Facebook to direct people there.

"Coming into hospital can be a stressful experience and we hope that by showing people what the hospital is like and how our staff deal with people that it will relieve some of that tension."

The Facebook page has already been instrumental in putting people in touch with support organisations, raising awareness of specialised health days and allowing patients and visitors the chance to raise issues with the Trust, ask direct questions and give praise where it’s due.

"We got a lot of questions and messages," said Sarah, "and we're able to give advice about what to do if you think you have flu, important messages about how long you are infectious with Norovirus and what to do if you’re coming in for an outpatient appointment.

"YouTube is perhaps not as immediate, but we're currently working on information videos about hand hygiene, stopping smoking and messages from our governors. We can keep these videos on YouTube all year, update them with new information and then refer to them via Facebook when we get related queries so it’s going to be a big year for us on the social media scene."

You can become a friend of the Royal on Facebook and find the hospital's YouTube channel by logging onto the sites and searching for 'Chesterfield Royal Hospital'.
