A Piece Of Civic History For Jubilee Celebrations

Friday 27th April 2012

The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield have, this afternoon, accepted a very special medallion.

The silver piece, designed and created by Sarah Stevenson, a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University, is to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The medallion counterweight will be fixed to the Mayoress's collarette that is worn on Civic occasions and during Mayoral events.

The Mayor's office won the title of National Civic Office in 2011 and the winning prize money has been used to fund the production of the medallion.

The design has been assayed (tested) and laser marked at the Sheffield Assay Office with a hallmark and a further inscription of 'Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee 2012'.

The design, (above), based around the Pomegranate emblem of Chesterfield, has been assayed (tested) and laser marked at the Sheffield Assay Office with a hallmark and a further inscription of 'Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee 2012'.

Present at the unveiling of the new medallion were Master of the Assay Office, Ashley Carson and the designer, along with other Civic Dignitaries including Leader of the Council, Cllr John Burrows and Chief Executive of the Council, Huw Bowen. Last year's Mayor and Mayoress Cllr and Mrs Keith Morgan were also in attendance, alongside the next Mayor and Mayoress, Don and Diane Parsons.

Present at the unveiling of the new medallion were Master of the Assay Office, Ashley Carson and the designer, along with other Civic Dignitaries

Councillor Peter Barr, Mayor of Chesterfield
(pictured above with the Mayoress, his Driver, Nico and Civic Secretary, Vivienne Miller) said: "The Queen's Jubilee is a very special occasion, so it's very fitting that we should mark such an occasion with a piece of Civic regalia that can be worn for many years to come and will become part of Chesterfield Borough Council's history."

Ashley Carson told the assembled guests that the Assay Office considered it a privilege to be involved, "We're delighted to get involved with this, on the back of a visit to the Assay Office by the former Mayor and Mayoress - the first time a Mayor of Chesterfield has ever been across to see us.

"It's the first time I've seen the piece today and I'm delighted with it. It was easy for me to say 'yes' to it and it's great to have the links with Sheffield Hallam, as this piece has proved that there are some great graduates to come out of there. It's a huge success story for all involved."

Designer of the medallion, Sarah Stevenson, admitted that she was struggling to come to terms with the enormity of the little piece of history that she'd created and handed over today

Designer of the medallion, Sarah Stevenson, (above) admitted that she was struggling to come to terms with the enormity of the little piece of history that she'd created and handed over today, "It's surreal - someone has just told me that I'm the only person alive whose involved with the chain, which is incredible! It's a special day and it's been great to be involved."

Sarah graduated from Sheffield Hallam in 2007 and then went on to do a business incubation course for silversmiths until 2010 which was supported by the Assay office in Sheffield, "It gave me the proper basis for starting my business and ever since, I've worked mainly to commission for silverware, table ware and a small amount of jewellery, with traditional techniques such as hammer work and engraving, whilst keeping the work contemporary."

She had, along with other silversmiths, applied for the commission and submitted her designs In January this year and admits she was astounded to find she had been successful.

And the final word from the lady who will, for the next week until their term of office is completed, be the custodian of the piece, Mayoress Jean Barr declared, "I'm very proud to be the first Mayoress to wear it."
