Local School Treats The Mayor

Monday 9th July 2012

A group of schoolchildren from Chesterfield took along their own hand made treats when they went to tea with the Mayor on Friday.

Local School Treats The Mayor

Pupils from Inkersall Primary School had enjoyed a baking lesson with Cllr Helen Elliott, who regularly visits the school, ahead of the visit. Having made a selection of buns, cupcakes and decorated cakes (above), the children then delighted the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield by sharing them in the Chambers.

The confectionery was well received by everyone, and three of the children won baking books after a competition judged by his Worship the Mayor and Mayoress and having been awarded first, second and third prize.

The children were also given a tour of the Parlour by the Mayoral couple and learned about the history of the town.

Cllr Elliott had organised the visit and she told The Chesterfield Post she had been thrilled with the way the children had responded, "It's important for young children to be able to bake as some young people nowadays don't bake at all. The enthusiasm shown by both these boys and girls has been inspiring. I feel that this generation may be the generation that can cook and bake. They're all excited and it's nice to see their faces as a lot didn't know what the Mayor did. It's been a privilege to be able to do this today."

Rebecca Johnson, a teacher at the school who accompanied the children to the Town Hall said she was extremely grateful to the Mayor for helping in what had been a valuable exercise, "We've made links with Cllr Elliot and we've taken part in a baking project which she's helped us with. We've done the baking at school - the children have made the cupcakes and have been awarded prizes.

"We've talked about what happens in the Chambers and we've been lucky enough to come along and have a look for ourselves and ask questions. It's great for the kids - we wanted to build links with figures in the community so it's nice for them to learn what the Mayor does and his role in the Community."

Two of the girls were awarded the Honourary titles Mayoress and Deputy Mayoress for the afternoon

Two of the girls were awarded the Honourary titles Mayoress and Deputy Mayoress for the afternoon and told us they'd had a great time.

Holly White, 11, who'd been voted in as Mayoress said, "We've enjoyed it, especially sitting on the Mayor's chair in Chambers (pictured above) and I got to wear the Mayor's chain which is very heavy."

Shannon, Deputy Mayoress, had extra reason to celebrate, "I won a book for my baking which I really enjoyed doing."

As Mayoress and Deputy Mayoress for the day, we asked what laws they would pass if they had the power. Stage left, a boy was heard to say that he'd close schools, but Holly said she'd, "Make the town a better place by making it safer" Shannon thought it may be a good idea to give everyone cakes and sweets every day but didn't feel that she would want to be Mayor for real as, "She didn't want to be that responsible."

The Mayor and Mayoress say they are proud and privileged to be able to share their role with the public and encourage the younger generations to learn about the history of the town.

Any school wanting to pay a visit to the Parlour and meet the Mayor and Mayoress would be welcome. Please contact the Civic Secretary on 01246 345239 .
