Councillor Very Concerned Over Police Station Closure

Monday 5th November 2012

One Derbyshire County Councillor says he's very concerned that the closing of a vital police office will affect the local area and has urged the Chief Constable to think again before withdrawing it from service.

Hasland Police Office is due to close on December 21st and Dave Allen, County Councillor for Birdholme, says that it's a real problem for residentsHasland Police Office
is due to close on December 21st and Dave Allen, County Councillor for Birdholme, (left) says that it's a real problem for residents, with many very worried about the issue, "We're very concerned locally about closing this facility. It's been there for years and it's been a major focus and point where both the public can reach the police officers and a base for the officers.

"Under the proposals, they will be stationed at Birchwood, which will be a long way for them to travel to start work and which means they'll have to walk to Hasland before they start."

He says that it will have a huge impact on the people locally, "The facility has always been well used by the public for meetings and a focus for police activity in the area. Unfortunately, it's one of the things that are happening around as part of the 20% cuts, this is having a direct effect on people. In the future, they'll have to use phones or travel to Birchwood."

Cllr Allen confirmed that it is also closing earlier than they had believed, "The lease runs out in March, but they're closing in December. It's something we're pursuing politically - I've written to the Chief Constable and had a reply which says that it's closing - but we're trying to change their minds.

It's on The Green, close to the centre of Hasland and the station has adverts in the window publicising events and support for the community, and the police also have meetings with local residents there, so it's a major loss for the community."

He is urging anyone who is worried about the closure to write to the Chief Constable, saying, "If people write or email the Chief Constable, they may take some notice and realise that this facility - which is well used and well recognised by the public - is something we don't want to lose locally."

Derbyshire Police have tonight given a statement to The Chesterfield Post, which says that the decision was not an easy one and that arrangements have been made for local people to have continued access to the police.

Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Karl Smethem said, Derbyshire Constabulary, along with forces across the country, is experiencing ongoing financial constraints resulting in us needing to make significant savings.Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Karl Smethem (left) said, "Derbyshire Constabulary, along with forces across the country, is experiencing ongoing financial constraints resulting in us needing to make significant savings.

"One area where savings need to be made is our building costs, including police stations and community offices. Unfortunately, a decision has been made to close the Hasland Police Office.

"We have been in contact with staff at Hasland Children's Centre to set up a drop-in office at their premises once the Hasland office has closed. This facility will be provided at no cost to the force.

"I want to reassure the public of Hasland that there will be no reduction in officers on their local Safer Neighbourhood team, or the amount of time those officers spend out in the community."
