Council Backs Call To Be Adoptive Parents

Tuesday 6th November 2012

A national call to find more adoptive families for children in care is being backed by Derbyshire County Council.

National Adoption Week is running this week (5th -11th November) and aims to encourage anyone who has thought about adoption to find out more.National Adoption Week
is running this week (5th -11th November) and aims to encourage anyone who has thought about adoption to find out more.

In Derbyshire, there have been 65 children adopted between November 2011 and 31st October 2012. But the county is currently still trying to find families for 112 children.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Cabinet Member for Young People said: "An adoptive parent can come from any background or culture. The only essential quality is that they can provide unconditional love for a child. We do everything possible to make sure we match a child with the family that is right for them and we offer a lot of on-going support to help adoptive families."

In the Government's first adoption scorecards, released last year, Derbyshire was shown to be performing strongly according to a number of the benchmarks.

The county was ranked third nationally for successfully adopting children aged five or over, and fifth nationally for finding adoptive homes for children with ethnic minority backgrounds.

And the time it takes to match a child with a suitable family was also above average, as it is 63 days in Derbyshire compared to the national average of 153 days.

Once a person has expressed an interest in adoption they receive an initial visit from a social worker to discuss what they want from adoption and what they feel they can offer a child.

If the application is taken further, the social worker will carry on working on an assessment, which takes six months on average.

The application goes before an adoption panel and if it is successful, a "matching" process begins to match the adopter with a suitable child.

Councillor Lewis said, "If you've ever thought about adoption, get in touch with us and we will help you find out more so you can decide if it is something that is right for you."
