It's been announced today that Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire police are working together closely to clamp down on anti-social behaviour at which is causing damage at the town's much loved Queen's Park.

There has been a recent spate of attacks on the Park's property which has resulted in broken swings, a smashed window at the Cricket Pavilion, stones removed from walls and hedges pulled out.

Much of this damage and, indeed, reports of other nuisance behaviour have happened during the evenings and after the park has been closed.

Derbyshire Police say there will now be joint patrols alongside staff from Chesterfield Borough Council to deter people from using the park after hours, and to help target any offenders.

The Council will also now look to take enforcement action against anyone found in the grounds after the park closes, which could include prosecution that carries the penalty of a fine of up to £500.

PCSO Hannah Blockwell of the Holmebrook and Rother Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "The damage has been costly for the Council to repair, and it is unfair to other people who want to enjoy the facilities during the daytime.

"We will be working with the Council to address these issues around anti-social behaviour by carrying out regular patrols, and officers will be taking action against any offenders."

Councillor Chris Ludlow, Executive Member for the Environment at Chesterfield Borough Council said: "Queen's Park is a much loved part of Chesterfield and is used all year round by thousands of residents and visitors.  We won't stand by and let this thoughtless vandalism spoil what is a beautiful and cherished part of our borough." Queen's Park opens at 8am and closes at 6pm.
