Mind How you Go

Thursday 16th September 2010
Over 600 drivers in Chesterfield have been stopped since the start of the football season by police officers concerned about the misuse of 'access only' roads near the Football Stadium.

Mind How You GoOfficers from the Dunston Moor and St Helen's neighbourhood team are now joining residents of Nelson and Sanforth Street in asking drivers to stop using these roads as illegal short cuts and warning that motorists face a £30 fine if they continue.

The number of motorists illegally using the two roads has increased since Tesco opened and the new football season began.

Officers have carried out a number of education sessions to warn people about using the roads and are now carrying out enforcement days issuing on the spot £30 fines.

Sergeant Les Rawson, who is in charge of the local Safer Neighbourhood team, said: "We have been actively policing the roads on match days since the stadium opened. Initially we recorded over 200 vehicles illegally using both roads during a four hour time slot.

"We have seen a reduction in offences on match days and this has been down to positive enforcement and the general policing of the road. We are also enforcing the restrictions on other days but, unfortunately, we are still recording up to 40 offences during peak times outside match days."

Chesterfield FC is also supporting the residents' plight and has put information on their website to direct traffic away from the streets. They also plan to put an appeal to drivers in a match programme and over the tannoy system at games and are working with local businesses to find more off-street parking.

Sanforth Street resident Noel Whiteley said: "We are very grateful to Sgt Rawson and his officers for their help but people continue to use the roads as a rat run.

"I am worried that a child could easily run out from behind a car and be knocked down because the roads are so narrow."

Joan Ellis and Carol Whiffen, who both live on Nelson Street, regularly go out onto the street taking down registration numbers to pass on to local police who then send advice letters to repeat offenders.

Police can only issue fines if they see someone contravening the access only signs.
