Reds Still On Top

Wednesday 22nd September 2010
ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law is looking for an immediate response to his side's first defeat of the season.

The Reds had won all eight league games this season and the Reds boss saw his side do everything but score in their top-of-the-table home clash against Boston United last Saturday.

In front of 1,309 - a best league attendance for Alfreton since 1982 - the Lincolnshire side rode their luck and pulled off a smash-and-grab victory with a 69th minute goal scored by former Alfreton trialist Danny Sleath.

Alfreton created half-a-dozen very presentable chances throughout and saw Nathan Arnold have a weak 62nd minute penalty saved by United's James McKeown.

Law said: "From our point of view it was disappointing because we created enough chances to have won it. We should have been 3-0 up without a doubt.

"On the positive side, we are still top of the league and two points clear, but if we had won it we would have opened up a good gap.The real positive though was the fact we created several chances against a top-three side.

"No-one wants to lose, but it might make us realise now how important certain games are and the Boston game came into that category.

"But, we go again now. We have got a break from the league this weekend, and with players coming back from injury, everyone is going to have to be on their toes if they want to keep their shirt.

"We will try and put it right in Saturday's FA Cup tie at Stalybridge Celtic and I am looking for a big, positive response and performance. The FA Cup is important to us and we want to progress as far as we can in it."

Midfielders Anthony Howell and Jake Moult are both expected to be fully fit for the trip to Tameside and Howell made a very welcome first appearance of the season against Boston when he came off the bench after finally recovering from a knee injury picked up seven days prior to the start of the campaign.

And, after starting the season in blistering fashion with four goals in the first five games, Moult is set to return having missed the last four games with a shin injury which has finally settled after a cortisone injection.

Should a replay be necessary against Stalybridge, this will be staged at the Impact Arena next Tuesday (September 28th) with a 7.45pm start.

Transport

ATFC Supporters' Association transport for the FA Cup tie at Stalybridge Celtic departs at 10.30am and seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
