Reds Boss Happy After TV Win Over Torquay Plus FA Cup Tie News

Wednesday 15th October 2014

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law was a very happy man after seeing his side end a four-game losing sequence with a superb 4-2 home win over a very good Torquay United.Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law (left), was a very happy man after seeing his side end a four-game losing sequence with a superb 4-2 home win over a very good Torquay United.

"I think the difference today was that the goals came with the performance" said Law, "We have probably never reached the heights of that performance this season but the finishing was of the highest order.

"That makes the difference. We got our chance and took them. In previous games we haven't, and the opposition maybe, I think it was Ryan Bowman who has had one and headed it wide and that's the little break you need and we got that today.

"Overall it was a good, solid performance. We had a good shape about us, we defended well as a team, as a group, and we have got to go and build on that."

Asked if he thought the link-up play between recalled striker Paul Clayton and Karl Hawley had impressed him, Law commentedAsked if he thought the link-up play between recalled striker Paul Clayton (left), and Karl Hawley had impressed him, Law commented: "It's a decision I made before the game (to bring Paul Clayton back).

"Young Joe (Ironside) has come in and played a lot of games and done really well.

"Paul was ready for the chance and then you are looking at Hawley and, to be fair, if you looked at that (his performance) today, you would be valid in asking the question 'Where has that performance been before?', 'Why has it taken a game against Torquay - his old team - to produce it?' He has shown why he has been a top player today.

"I thought the pair of them gave us a base. We got it forward early, they won first ball and dropped on second and we can come in behind it then, but the key today was scoring the goals."

Law explained his decision to bring man of the match Clayton off on 74 minutes, "He was knackered I think! I can't remember the last time he played!

"I am amazed he got that far. He got a block challenge and got a bit of a dead-leg, but you will literally have to pull Paul off, he won't want to come off.

"I just thought he had blown out at the end. It's a long time since he has played and you need to be careful" ended Law.
