"Wrong Decisions Cost Us" - Spireites Manager John Sheridan

Thursday 16th February 2012

Wrong Decisions Cost Us - Spireites Manager John SheridanAfter seeing his side concede a goal in the 88th minute to level the score and send the Spireites home with just one point rather than the three they had been heading for, a clearly frustrated John Sheridan (left) spoke to the press.

He was asked first of all if he felt that it was 2 points dropped...
"Yes I think so. I definitely think we played well - our shape and everything first half was really good. I think we caused them problems and we could have scored one or two more goals. Tommy (Lee)'s had nothing to do. I thought it was a really professional job, so to come out of the game not winning it, they put us under pressure for the last five minutes, but I think that was through our own downfall.

"I don't know why, but for the last half an hour we get really sloppy, losing our shape and people doing the wrong things and making the wrong decisions, when you do that, you put yourself under pressure and that's what we did."

What can you say to your defenders, or all over the park?
"Well I don't say it to the defenders, I think it's the whole team, all over the pitch. We didn't retain the ball, the midfield - who'd done really well the first half - didn't keep their shape and we dropped too deep, invited pressure and gave silly free kicks away and you're always going to cause yourself problems."

Did you feel that the Bury goal was coming then?
"Well they were putting us under pressure, but it was down to us, giving the ball away so cheaply it was scary! I was watching a different team last half hour which is why I'm so disappointed and frustrated."

For 60 minutes though Chesterfield played really well...
"Really well, I thought our shape was good and they didn't cause us any problems. They're a good team and they have a good record at home and they have some good players, so I thought our shape was good and we caused them problems when we had to, so I was very comfortable. They were always going to get a good spell in the game but we sat back, did the wrong things and it ended up costing us."

Given where you are in the season, I guess this dropping of the two points hurts quite a lot...
"Yes it hurts very much. We're in a position where we have to win games and I thought that tonight was a great opportunity. You're in a winning position and it was very comfortable. I just think we do a lot of things and that's the frustrating thing.

"I don't know if people aren't listening, I can't do anything, you can only talk and it's about players on the pitch. I've got good, experienced players who've played a lot of games - not just the young lads - I expect young lads to make mistakes and do the wrong things, but as a team, we lost our shape and didn't retain the ball, people getting into the wrong positions, making the wrong runs when the game was there if you wanted it”

The pressure's on for the Spireites at the moment but they have gained ground on sides tonight...
"I'm not bothered about anyone else. I wanted to win the game, to go in and pat them all on the back after a good performance and I've gone in and had a little go at them as we should never play like we did for the last half hour. People need to learn how to see a game out, I can only talk and try and tell them what to do, I can't go out on the pitch and hold their hands. People have to take a bit of responsibility - we could have ended up losing the game."

You were forced into changes - James Hurst and Mark Allott - what's their situation?
"Mark's got a hamstring injury and James has had a sore ankle for 4 or 5 weeks now so they're both a bit sore today and not ready for the game. We'll just see how they are for the game on Saturday."

A big game on Saturday it's a chance for Chesterfield to hit back?
"Yes, it's a derby game, a big game for us, but we have to try and win the game. We need to win games and that's why I'm so gutted tonight and gutted at Carlisle - they've worked their socks off the players - you can see what they're trying to do, they're trying to win games, but we do switch off at times and there's not a lot you can do about that. It's about having people organising and adjusting and getting a grip of each other on the pitch, giving people a rollicking when you have to, but I think we were very quiet."
