"Full Credit To The Whole Team Today" Spireites Boss John Sheridan

Sunday 19th February 2012

Spireites Tame The Owls It was a buoyant John Sheridan who faced the media after the Sheffield Wednesday game and, in an honest interview, told us that he felt there had been much progression in the team over the last few games and how delighted he was to have bagged the 3 points.

A victory for resilience and determination today?
"Yes. Obviously I knew the importance of the game, it was a big derby for us and the fans, but first and foremost we were trying to beat whoever we're playing against, we need the points. But to win in this manner - I thought we battled against a really good team who can cause problems.

"After the first 10 minutes or so I thought 'here we go' because Wednesday put us under a lot of pressure early in the game. But I thought once we weathered the storm in those early minutes, we really got into the game.

"Obviously I was pleased that it was 0-0 at half time, but then I thought we really upped the game second half. We came out and had a real go. And to get the goal, it was a great passage of football to get the penalty.

"Once you get the goal -I said to the lads at half time - stay in the game, keep it tight, it's going to be one those that if you get a break... and luckily for us, we got a break.

"They're always going to put you under pressure. They put balls in the box and they're very effective and we had to defend at times.

"Full credit to all my team but, the back four and the keeper made a great save late on and I though we really battled against a strong outfit and we stood up to be counted - that's what we have to do given the position we're in!"

Would it be fair to say that a month or so ago you would not have stood that?
"Yes - we would have lost that game, you're dead right! Probably would have lost that game 2-0. I didn't want to mess with my team, but the lads who have come in have given us a lift as they just want to play football and play in a good league and play first team football - they don't really know what's going on, they just came in and hit the ground running.

"The lads who have been here, they've worked really hard through the season and responded with them and I think over the last 10 games, we've improved as a team defensively. We're working really hard to try and keep clean sheets and I think I have a settled team back, especially in the back areas.

"I always felt that going forward we had players who could score goals, but we were conceding too many and always chasing games. We're staying in games now and if you stay in games, there's always something might just happen, you might get that lifeline, and that's what's happened today."

A good result against one of the leading teams is quite relevant isn't it, you have nearly all the top teams in the division to play in fairly short order?

"Yes - to get this, it will give everyone at the club a boost as they're our nearest rivals and a big club - we matched them and we won the game. Over the season when we've played Charlton and Huddersfield, they'll all tell you, we've given them a game - but we've lost too many games - and that's what counts.

"We know the situation we're in and we're far from out of danger, we need to take it one week at a time and get 3 points. We were very unlucky over the last 10 game period not to pick more points u,p so we have to carry on doing what we're doing and push on."

That was a big penalty for Dean Morgan to take in front of the away end...
"I didn't know that Morgs was taking it - obviously Danny Whitaker takes them normally, Whoever's got the confidence to take it, it doesn't worry me - whoever takes it has got the character to put it in the net," he went on, with a laugh, "I don't watch the penalties, I haven't watched since I've been here! I never watch as it's usually Danny (Whitaker) and until the Exeter game, he'd scored everytime and I'd never watched him so, although I'm not superstitious, I'm getting more and more superstitious, but I'm not a superstitious person!"

Any news on Gregor Robertson?
"He felt his hamstring in the first ten minutes and tried to carry on to be fair to him but, when he went in for the tackle, he felt it a little bit more so he's better to come off and we'll assess him and see how he is."
