Spireites Tame The Owls

Saturday 18th February 2012 15:10

Chesterfield FC 1 - 0 Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a sell out crowd at the b2net, with only empty blue seats visible in the East stand's segregation area.

Spireites Tame The OwlsThe 10,000 crowd had all come to see what Spireite gaffer John Sheridan had described as likely to b a spectacle, and the atmosphere was certainly electric as the teams came out.

Both sides had everything to play for, The Owls for the 3 points which would continue their assault on the Championship, the Spireites of course desperate to leave the bottom four and climb out of the danger zone.

After sitting out the Bury game through injury, Mark Allott returned to the team sheet, with Tuesday's scorer Nicky Ajose seemingly having done enough to earn his place in the starting line up today.

It was certainly fast paced and flowing football from the start, with chances early on for the Owls, all thankfully saved by arguably Chesterfield's most consistent player, goalkeeper Tommy Lee.

There were chances for Chesterfield though with Ridehalgh having the best chance of the half on 28 minutes, firing a shot on target, though caught by Bywater.

An injury to Jermaine Johnson on 23 forced Gary Megson into a substitution, bringing on John Bostock.

After scoring his debut goal on Tuesday at Bury, Ajose had a cracking chance for his second when a 25 yard cross from Jack Lester just went wide on 38.

A late first half injury to Gregor Robertson had fans holding their breath fearing the worst as he was led down by the tunnel by Jamie Hewitt and moments later John Sheridan made his first substitution - bringing on Dean Morgan.

HT 0-0

No changes at the beginning of the second half after both teams made enforced changes in the first 45, but within 10 minutes, ex Spireite Gary Madine came on for a very displeased O'Grady.

A run by Davis on 59 looked like heading goalwards, but it was cleared by Jones. Talbots shot just 4 minutes later was saved by Bywater.

Gary Megson made his third substitution on 65, bringing on Clinton Morrison which seemed to underline the Owls desperation to go on the attack. But, despite that, it was the home side that had the more chances.

A shot from Lowe on 75 had the kop's hearts stopping momentarily, but Trotman was there to block and the collective held breath was exhaled.

Dean Morgan fired the penalty in to a rapturous roar from the home crowdA challenge by Bostock on Ajose led to a Spireite penalty on 77 which Dean Morgan (left) took, to chants of "Deano, Deano" - and with 13 minutes to go, 'Deano' fired the penalty in to a rapturous roar from the home crowd.

Perhaps mindful of the last couple of games which have seen Chesterfield squander a lead in the dying moments, with 6 minutes to go, John Sheridan made his last substitution, bringing on fresh legs and throwing on Westcarr for Jack Lester who received a standing ovation from Spireites fans.

Just 9 nervy minutes later, the whistle blew and Chesterfield had won the bragging rights to the local derby - and 3 points stayed at the b2net.

The match drew the highest crowd of the season so far with attendance figures at 9,279 - 2,802 Sheffield Wednesday fans making the trip today.

The early kick off (on police advice), means Chesterfield move up 2 places to 21st in League 1, although the weekend's final position is to be determined by other results to come later in the day.
