"Proud To Be At Wembley" Manager John Sheridan's Thoughts On The Week

Friday 3rd February 2012

It's been another busy but successful week for the Spireites who are currently on their way to Carlisle where they will be taking on the Cumbrians and hoping for their fifth win in five.

Proud To Be At Wembley, but the league is the main thing - Manager John Sheridan's Thoughts On The WeekWith snow forecast over Brunton Park tomorrow, there are doubts that the game can go ahead, with Carlisle issuing a statement earlier saying that they're keeping an eye on the situation and there is a small possibility that a pitch inspection may take place at 10.30am in the morning.

Ahead of the game, we caught up with Manager John Sheridan (left) who told us about events during a week which has seen them reach Wembley in the JPT.

They say a week is a long time in politics, 2 weeks have certainly been pivotal in Chesterfield haven't they - ...4 wins on the bounce, 2 clean sheets and a trip to Wembley booked?
"The players have reacted really well - it's a good response from them and I'm really pleased for them, but we've got a lot of hard work ahead. We'll enjoy the other night and it's great for the club and the players involved to get to the Wembley final, but that's gone now and we'll enjoy that when it comes around because we've got plenty of tough games now."

Have your nerves recoverered? it was a tense game...
"Yes, but I knew Oldham would put us under pressure, they're a good team, attacking wise. I think we could have done better. I think if we had retained the ball better, we would have caused them more problems but I think the most important thing was to get through the tie to Wembley, so I don't think the performance matters - we won the game and the clean sheet is very pleasing."

What does getting to Wembley mean to you, to lead your team out at Wembley, explain how that feels?
"I'm very proud - not many managers get to do it and not many players get to play in a final. I'm very pleased for everyone involved, especially with our league position, so this just gives all the fans something to look forward to. I'll enjoy the day when it comes around but I'm more focused on our league form and that's something that I, and the players, need to concentrate on."

The league form is beginning to show signs of recovery though isn't it...
"Yes we're on a little run at the moment. Things can turn round in football so that's why I never get carried away - winning or losing, I try and stay the same, because I know things can change very quickly. But, whilst we're winning football matches, I'm hoping it will breed confidence into the lads and that we can win games, just carry on what we're doing at the moment."

We've talked about the 'mini-league' before, do you think they'll be watching you with a wary eye now, thinking that you're the side to beat?
"No. I think all the teams that are down there - the 6 or 8 who I said - will all believe they can get out of it, that's what their managers will believe and that's what I do, believe we can get out if it, but I'm not bothered abut anyone else, I've just got to take care of our situation and we've got to win that next game when it comes around. If you keep winning games, things will take care of themselves."

You bought Nicky Ajose in, what made you want him and what will he bring to the squad?
"I've always liked him as a player, he did really well at Bury, he's an intelligent footballer, he's got pace and he can score a goal. It's down to Nicky really, I'm hoping he can come in and I can give him an opportunity to try and play one or two games; he hasn't played very much at Peterborough and even at Scunthorpe. But I know what he can give us and he's the kind of player I like, so hopefully he'll add to what I've already got."

Are you happy with the team you have now, or are there likely to be more in?
"I won't bring anyone else in now, I think the squad's strong enough now and hopefully everyone will stay fit for the final push."

Talking of fitness, Aaron Downes has this week suffered a knee injury, what do you know about that?
"It's a shame, I'm not sure of the extent of the injury, I think he went to Bristol to see the specialist. It's a shame as he's gone there and helped them to one or two results and was going to go to the end of the season and get some games under his belt the same as Jamie (Lowry). It's benefitted Jamie. No, it's just a shame for the poor lad as he's worked so hard for the last couple of years but I'm hoping it's not too serious. It's nothing to do with his old injury which is a plus point, but it's in the physio's hands now."

And Jamie Lowry, he played against Oldham the other night, is he back?
"Jamie will stay here - he's really benefited from playing at Crewe so he'll be involved tomorrow in the squad. I've had a chat with him - I'd seen a big improvement in him the other night and the games he had at Crewe have really benefitted him, so hopefully he'll work hard and try and get in the team."

Results have begun to turn, what do you think has made the biggest impact - the new blood and new energy?
"I can look over the season and I really do think that we could have easily had another 15 points on board. I think the new lads have come in and given us that enthusiasm and given the other players a lift and it's benefiting us, but other than that, I think we're going out and showing good work ethic and a good attitude. I think the clean sheets are important as I think we have people who can create chances for us and if you can keep clean sheets, you have a good chance of winning games."

And onto Carlisle if it goes ahead, what are their threats?
"It'll be a tough game, they're in a good position and with a really good manager in my eyes, who's well established in this division. They're in and around the playoffs so again, we have to go and try and win it. I'm sure Greg (Abbott) will expect a tough game from us, so we have to go there and continue what we've been doing of late."

Lee Miller, he's out after a red card isn't he?
"Yes, they have one or two suspensions, but they still have players who can come in and do a good job for them."

Any injuries?
"Jimmy (Juan) is still struggling - he's jogging today but still a bit sore but we don't have any more."
