Don't Mess Around

Tuesday 21st September 2010

Chesterfield Borough Council has launched a new campaign aimed at tackling dog owners who don't clean up their dog mess.

The 'Dog Poo Fairy' campaign will highlight the danger of dog mess for children and the health risks it can carry.

It's part of a national campaign run by 'Keep Britain Tidy' and will be organised in Chesterfield by the Council's Spire Pride team.

The Dog Poo Fairy campaignThe 'Taking the Lead' road show will be visiting local parks during September, where residents can pick up free dog poo bags as well as getting free general advise about dog welfare, responsible ownership and a micro-chipping service (£10) will be on offer.

Cllr Ian Openshaw, Lead Member for Sustainable Communities and Climate Change at the Council said: "The majority of dog owners in Chesterfield play a responsible role in looking after their pets. It is the minority of irresponsible owners who fail to pick up after their dogs and we want these people to really take notice of the distress and potential danger to children. There is no excuse not to pick up after your dog. There are plenty of dog poo bins in the borough and you can also use a normal street bin to dispose of dog mess."

If caught, dog owners who don't clean up after their pets will be issued with a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice.  The Council's Street Scene Enforcement Team has issued 37 notices this year.  Failure to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice can result in a court conviction.

Sherri Stock from the Council's Street Scene Enforcement Team said: "Our Enforcement Officers receive information every week about problem locations around the town. We will work with the local community to target problem areas and would encourage people to report anyone they know who doesn’t pick up after their dog.

"Unfortunately there is no such thing as the dog poo fairy so dog owners need to clean up after their pets and help keep our streets and parks safe and clean for us all to enjoy."

  • The Taking the Lead road show dates are:
  • Langer Lane Playing Fields 28th September
  • Stand Park 29th September
  • Poolsbrook Country Park 30th September
