'Perils Of Pickpockets' Posters

Wednesday 25th May 2011

Posters highlighting the dangers of pickpockets are being put up around Chesterfield town centre to help prevent shoppers falling victim to retail crime.

Derbyshire police
and the Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership have produced the posters reminding people to be vigilant with personal belongings.

The "Who's got their eye on your purse?" posters offer simple advice to put money away as soon as you have withdrawn it, keep purses in secure handbags and be aware of who is around you.

They will feature in shops and car parks around town.

PC Steve O'Callaghan, of the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "There have been a number of purse thefts in recent months and the posters are one of a number of things we are doing to raise awareness of the problem.

"By informing people we hope they will take some simple steps to help prevent themselves becoming a victim of this type of crime."

On Monday, May 12th, a 75-year-old woman's purse was taken from her bag while she was in the British Heart Foundation charity shop.

At around 11am on Monday, May 9th, a 76-year-old woman had her purse stolen from her bag sometime between leaving the Post Office and entering a charity shop in Chesterfield town centre.
