Shrimpers Fall Through The Spireite's Net

Monday 11th October 2010
by Paul Fisher

We all thought the Spireites had used their "get out of jail" card last week at home to Crewe in the epic 5-5 match so where this one came from I've no idea.

A late winner, more accustomed to the teams of the Premier League, designed to keep even the most ardent of fan in their seats till the end, is always a glorious way to win a football match. Especially when it comes when you have least deserved it. Nevertheless Chesterfield showed a desire to make sure of victory when one point looked to be the end product of a frantic week.

Try as we might, the final ball just did not exist, we created numerous chances as good sides always will do, the toil of the previous week and the drama of the midweek cup match in South Yorkshire were perhaps beginning to catch up on us. Too many players seemed off the pace and the cutting edge lacked spark. The endeavour and will to win was plain as day but maybe the stamina had started to drift.

Craig Clay followed up a dramatic week by getting his first start in the Football League and made a statement, playing as if he had made a hundred appearances rather then just the four. Clay and Derek Niven held the midfield line but the spark wasn't quite there between the two of them as they hadn't appeared together much apart from the odd few minutes on Wednesday night at Hillsborough.

Craig Davies was another one who, whilst willing to chase every ball, lacked an edge which was apparent, though his strike partner Jack Lester fashioned the opening goal in typical predator fashion. Receiving the ball just outside the box, Lester turned between two defenders and was caught by the both of them inside the box and the inevitable penalty was granted the Spireites way. Danny Whitaker - the usual penalty taker who ironically missed one in the frantic shoot out on Wednesday - this time planted his drive straight down the middle and the Spireites had the lead. Minutes later though, the Essex side had drawn level - and deservedly so.

The game entered a difficult phase, a sort of 'testing each other out' type of scenario. Both sides showed glimpses of wanting the three points, but at the end of a tired week it seemed likely this just one point each was the more likely outcome. Southend had also played in a cup match midweek the night before the Spireites.

It wasn't until John Sheridan played the card which saw Boden and Bowery, the young lads who have little league experience between them, placed on to lead the attack and they changed the course of the match.

It was Boden though who won the plaudits - Sheridan stating that only Boden and Jack Lester could have scored a goal like that, high praise indeed, and the points were in the bag.

Today, we sit in 2nd place and perfectly poised to maintain our assault on League Two promotion. If the Premier League sides can get late winners, then so can Chesterfield.
