Wycombe 1 - Spireites 2
Davies At The Double - A Fan's View

Sunday 17th October 2010
by Paul Fisher

Kevin Davies made his international debut this week for England and at 33 years old, becomes the oldest debutant for the national side since Leslie Compton in 1950. Davies is also the fourth former Chesterfield FC player to represent the three lions. Sam Hardy, Willis Edwards and Gordon Banks were the other three after leaving North Derbyshire.

It was another international though who made his name yesterday with a brace of goals and confirmed himself as the clubs leading scorer. Craig Davies (no relation to Kevin of course), kept up his fine run of form which has seen him amass a goal every other game when played. Davies hit the winner with 17 minutes to go from a superb Jack Lester through ball in front of the travelling Spireite supporters. Davies has scored identical goals at home to Lincoln and away at Northampton this season and slotted the pass with ease past Chairboys keeper Nikki Bull.

Chesterfield started the match in second place and it was clear in the opening moments that the Wycombe side presented a difficult itch to scratch, as their run of form consisted of four straight victories in a series of six games unbeaten.

Wanderers played some lovely passing football and in particular their front three of Beavon, Strevens and Betsy were moving all over the frontline.

The Spireites though, had their moments and that came when a Sandell slip presented Drew Talbot with the ball and his pinpoint cross found Craig Davies who planted his first ever headed goal for the Spireites past keeper Bull.

The second half and the first ten minutes were all Wycombe, with goalmouth scrambles and long range efforts plus saves from Tommy Lee.

Wanderers eventually equalised through Ben Strevens following a corner, the former Dagenham man picked up the loose ball in the penalty area and smashed it home.

Then for some inexplicable reason, the Buckinghamshire side sat back and allowed Chesterfield to press for an advantage. Lester came on as a substitute for the tiring Ian Morris and made a difference which resulted in the Spireites taking the lead for the second time.

A few hairy moments towards the end, but the defence held resolute and the three points were going Derbyshire's way. It was disappointing to see Jack Hunt receive a fifth yellow card which means he misses the vital match at home to Shrewsbury next week.

Surely there will be a 7,000 plus crowd next Saturday, its first versus fifth in the table, and a chance for us to make a statement to one of League Two's leading sides.

Craig Davies will be looking to keep up his good form for the Spireites, though he may be looking to get back into the Welsh national side. Davies holds five caps for them, although never scored, but at the moment things are looking good for the maverick goalscorer in Spireite blue rather than St Davids Red.
