Worcestershire Royals 121-7 20 overs - Derbyshire Falcons 104 all out 19.4 overs. Worcestershire Royals won by 15 runs.

Derbyshire found defeat from a probable victory after restricting the Worcestershire Royals to 121-7 after their 20 overs.

The highlight of the bowling for the Falcons was Tom Knight, the Sheffield born youngster with career best figures of 3-16, playing in only his fourth match of this format.

No batsman could get going for the Falcons and eventually succumbed in the final over, when Steffan Jones was run out. Derbyshire missed an opportunity to go into the all important top four positions.

Derbyshire remained unchanged from their abandoned match at Durham on Sunday. The Falcons faced a Worcestershire side which also had their game abandoned at New Road, where they were due to play Lancashire.

Worcestershire named Shaaiq Choudhry in their side, a former Dronfield Contact player in the North Derbyshire junior leagues.

Worcestershire won the toss and opted to bat, knowing that the Derby track has seen plenty of runs in the T20 format. Falcons skipper Luke Sutton for a change was happy to chase, knowing that Worcester had to post a good score.

The innings started off brightly for the Royals with two lots of five wides in the first over from the bowling of Stefan Jones, Worcester were in fact 10-0 off the bowling of only one legitimate ball.

Derbyshire grabbed the opening wicket in the fourth over with Tim Groenewald clean bowling Moeen Ali who has scratched around for just 4 from 17 balls.

Chesney HughesAs the game was filmed live on SKY, the County Ground had the big screen available to view third umpire referrals. This was used for the first time as Luke Sutton appealed for the stumping of former England international, Vikram Solanki, from the bowling of Chesney Hughes (pictured left). The decision went in the favour of the Royals batsman.

Tom Knight was brought into the attack from the City End and wreaked havoc with the ball, picking up 3 wickets for 4 runs in 10 balls. The first to fall to Knight was Dutch international batsman, Alex Kervezee, who was caught at short third man by Jon Clare for 14 runs off 15 balls.

Knight then got the prized wicket of Shakib al Hasan, the former Bangladeshi captain, caught by Wes Durston at backward point for 8. The young 17 year old then grabbed his hat-trick of wickets by bowling Solanki for 28, Knight had not conceded a boundary in his four allotted overs and Worcestershire at that stage were 68-4 after 12 overs.

Gareth Andrew
was caught and bowled by Wes Durston for 8. It was Durston's (above centre) first ball of his spell. Worecestershire then hit their first six of the innings in the 17th over by James Cameron who launched Durston over long on, it was the first boundary for 61 balls. Cameron departed the very next over, run out by Martin Guptill at deep midwicket for 17. It took Worcestershire till the 18th over to register the 100 mark, due to Derbyshire's excellent tight bowling and fielding.

In the final over, Daryl Mitchell was bowled by Steffan Jones and the Royals closed on 121-7, a below par score judging by the sides batting first at the County Ground in the T20.

Derbyshire started their innings in speculative form, Guptill departed in the second over with the score on only 9 before Wes Durston was bowled by a ball which turned from Shakib al Hasan. Next over, form player Wayne Madsen was plumb LBW to Moeen Ali, and Derbyshire were 27-3.

The Royals were using spin as their form of attack as well. Garry Park ended a disappointing inning by being caught at deep square leg by Andrew from the bowling of Moeen Ali again.

Luke Sutton

Luke Sutton (above) then promoted himself up a place in the order, before getting into a muddle with Chesney Hughes at the opposite end and being run out with a direct throw from cover by Mitchell.

Ross WhiteleyDerbyshire were throwing a good position away, Ross Whiteley (pictured left) joined Hughes and despatched a full toss with a sweet cover drive. Whiteley then departed in the 14th over caught by Hasan at cover point for 16.

The Falcons required 48 from 5 overs with only 3 wickets remaining.

Derbyshire then lost Jon Clare who was caught again by Hasan off the bowling of Chris Whelan, who now had his career best figures in T20 matches.

Whelan then snapped up Tim Groenewald for 8 off 3 balls, including Derbyshire's only six of the innings, before Jones was run out in the final over.

Derbyshire will be looking to avenge this defeat by playing bottom side Northamptonshire on Friday.

Karl KrikkenHead of Cricket, Karl Krikken (left), was under no illusion as to where the problem lay with Derbyshire's performance.

Krikken stated, "We bowled really well, the plusses were the spinners and the seamers, we weren't as good as we should have been in the batting department.

"We've scored a lot of runs recently, we didn't really set the world alight with the bat, but we should have won tonight."

Krikken was quick to praise young spinner Tom Knight, "Knighty has done well, he is part of the academy, we just need to make sure he keeps his feet on the ground and he'll be a great county cricketer."

Looking forward to the trip to Northamptonshire, "Northants are always good on their own patch, we'll assess the wicket when we get there to see if we'll change the side. We'll still take the 13 players that we have used well in the T20's so far."
