RESULTS -
BEECHWOOD SAAB ECB DERBYSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE

Alfreton (6pts) 132-8 [50 overs] (M Deane 3-34, S Lacey 3-21)
drew with
Chesterfield (19pts) 221-9 [50 overs] (B Gladwin 47, A Hibbert 63, T Young 3-53, A Mace 3-29)

REPORT: Alfreton fight goes on

Alfreton were always second best at home to Chesterfield but the Premier League strugglers managed to battle to a hard-fought draw against opponents who are slowly but surely beginning to make an impact at the right end of the table.

Ben Slater (27) and Brian Gladwin (47) opened brightly for Chesterfield and added 62 although Stuart McRobert (2-48) managed to peg them back to 117 for 3 with the wickets of Gladwin and Simon Lacey. Skipper Alex Hibbert (63) regained the initiative for Chesterfield with a fine 89-ball knock and the visitors ended their innings on a respectable 221 for 9.

Mike Deane (3-34) ended Alfreton's hopes of a sustained challenge with the early wickets of Graham Bush and Andy Gwatkin but Jake Simpson (28) dug in and took the score along to 52 for 2 in the company of Alex Mace. Wickets for Gladwin, Tim Kirk and Lacey (3-21) reduced Alfreton to near-defeat at 94 for 8 but a fighting unbeaten knock from Tom Young (22*) eventually sealed a small share of the points for his side. With Ben Slater, not to be confused with his Chesterfield namesake, for company, Young moved Alfreton on to 132 for 8 at the close.

3 A Hibbert - 2 B Gladwin - 1 T Young

Alvaston & Boulton (22pts) 173-3 [40.3 overs] (C McIlroy 68*, H Adnan 33)
beat
Lullington Park (3pts) 172-8 [44 overs] (A Goodwin 32, M Sanderson 40,
A Gough 40, T Palladino 4-37)
by 7 wickets

REPORT: Park all at sea

Lullington Park's slump in League form continued with a second successive comprehensive defeat at fast-improving Alvaston & Boulton.

With five ex or current Derbyshire players amongst their ranks it was the newest of them, ex-Essex opening bowler Tony Palladino, who broke the back of the Lullington innings.

Steve Stubbings asked Park to bat first and there were no mishaps for the visitors until the last ball of the 8th over when Richard Green nicked Adam Wheatcroft with the score on 16. Palladino (4-37) struck with the 2nd ball of his 7th over, trapping Sam Eaton lbw, and James Doherty went first ball, again being adjudged LBW by umpire Ruki De Silva. Jonny Shales saved the hat trick but was bowled from the last ball of the same over to leave Park on 40 for 4. Andrew Goodwin (32) was joined by Matt Sanderson and saw off Palladino only to flash at veteran Steve Ottewell and be caught at slip by a tumbling Steve Stubbings. Sanderson (40) and Alan Gough (40) batted well in the only 50 partnership of the innings and both looked to be having little trouble but Gough was then caught off Adam Wheatcroft (2-30) and Sanderson was held by Hassan Adnan on the boundary.

They had at least taken Park to a total that could be defended and there was an early success when makeshift opener Adam Wheatcroft was bowled by Jonny Shales. Stubbings joined Chris McIlroy and the two left handers added 58 before Stubbings (27) was adjudged lbw to Alan Gough for 27. This was the fourth of umpire De Silva's eventual five lbw decisions, the fifth seeing Sanderson trap Adnan (33) but not before he and McIlroy (68*) had added 67 for the third wicket to leave the result in little doubt.

Park must seek to take their cup form into the League as the champions have now slipped to ninth place. Too many players are searching for form at the same time and confidence is draining.

Next Saturday sees Quarndon visiting the Park before Lullington visit Quarndon the following day for the Premier League T20 Finals and another encounter with Alvaston & Boulton whose recent upward turn in form sees them now occupy a relatively healthy eighth place.

3 T Palladino - 2 C McIlroy - 1 M Sanderson

Ilkeston Rutland (6pts) 243-7 [50 overs] (D Smit 122, A Park 38,
S Chilman 3-51)
lost to
Dunstall (22pts) 245-3 [47 overs] (T Mandleberg 66, J Benstead 101*,
J Jennings 44*)
by 7 wickets

REPORT: Smit ton all in vain for bottom club

Bottom of the table Ilkeston Rutland posted a challenging 243 for 7, thanks mainly to the efforts of Dave Smit (122), but opponents Dunstall raced to victory by seven wickets after the break with three overs to spare.

Alex Park (38) was the only other Ilkeston batsmen to make a mark but it was still a sizable score despite the efforts of Scott Chilman (3-51) who continued his fine season with the ball.

After the interval, a superb unbeaten century from Jamie Benstead (101*) did the trick for Dunstall and he combined well early on with Tom Mandleberg (66). John Jennings (44*) was on hand to accompany Benstead as Dunstall completed victory, a result that sees them to the dizzy heights of sixth place.

3 J Benstead - 2 D Smit - 1 T Mandleberg

Quarndon (12pts) 151-7 [45 overs] (M Sultan 44*, R S Haider 3-44)
match abandoned v
Rolls Royce Leisure (12pts) 186-9 [48 overs] (R S Haider 42*, M Waseem 33,
M Sultan 4-31)

REPORT: Honours even at Quarndon

Rolls Royce Leisure picked up twelve useful points from their visit of Quarndon, both sides, however, being denied further points by the weather with Quarndon's reply marooned on 151 for 7 with three overs still left to be bowled.

They closed some way short of Royces 186 for 9 but Mohammed Sultan was still going strong on 44 not out and so all results were still possible. Mat Dowman (29) had batted well at the top of Quarndon's card but Raja Sohail Haider (3-44) and Mehmoon Tariq (2-53) reduced the home side to 87 for 4 and the match at that stage was very much in the balance. Naeem Akhtar (2-30) gave Royces the advantage late on but Sultan was still lurking dangerously at the close.

Royces innings was also a patchy affair with James Ede (2-51) reducing them to 57 for 3 but middle-order runs from Mohammed Waseem (33) and Haider (42*) meant a reasonable final total to defend. Sultan (4-31) preceded his fine innings with a superb display with the ball to keep his side in the hunt.

3 M Sultan - 2 RS Haider - 1 M Dowman

Sandiacre Town (22pts) 197-8 [47.5 overs] (J Trueman 45, N Qureshi 61,
D Jordison 31*, B Ashdown 4-32)
beat
Spondon (7pts) 196-9 [48 overs] (J Ratcliffe 82, J Jordison 3-46)
by 2 wickets

REPORT: Sandiacre sneak home

Sandiacre Town kept their unbeaten record, and their Beechwood Saab Premier League lead intact, but it was a close run thing against third-placed Spondon.

In a match reduced by a few overs to 48 overs a side Spondon were pegged back by Ryan McFadyean (2-53), Andrew Marlow (2-51) and John Jordison (3-46) and restricted to 196 for 9. Jack Ratcliffe, with a superb innings of 82 featuring 4 sixes and 8 fours, had helped his side recover from a disastrous 82 for 6 in the company of Adam Finley and 57 was added for the seventh wicket. Joe Kellogg (21*) helped boost the score further but in the end a few more runs would have proved very useful.

Suheil Tandon (2-58) removed James Chapman cheaply soon after the restart but a stand of 84 between John Trueman (45) and Naveed Qureshi (61) put the leaders in the box-seat. However, Chris Windmill (2-39) and Ben Ashdown (4-32) brought Spondon back into contention and, but for Dave Jordison's excellent unbeaten 30, the visitors would have been easy winners.

As it was Jordison's heroics saw Sandiacre across the finishing line with just one ball to spare.

Ticknall (8pts) 208 all out [48 overs] (J Lamb 57, P Borrington 95, K Dean 3-36,
T Smith 4-36)
lost to
Ockbrook & Borrowash (27pts) 209-9 [48 overs] (M Lineker 33, J Guthrie 72,
Z Abbas 3-52, R Cowley 3-37) by 1 run

REPORT: Agony for Ticknall

If it's tense, exciting finishes that you are looking for then look no further than wherever Ticknall are playing - their latest encounter at The Grange with title-chasing Ockbrook & Borrowash going down to the very last ball.

Unfortunately for Ticknall they came up short by just a single in their attempt to overhaul Ockbrook's 209 for 9 in 48 overs - Graham Chamberlain being run-out off the final delivery attempting the single that would have earned his side a tie.

Instead they lost by just one run after a breathless last few overs that saw them crash from 197 for 3 to 208 all out.

Earlier in the day Chamberlain had grabbed the early wicket of Matt Cassar but the visitors hit back through Jonny Guthrie (72) and Matt Lineker. The search for late runs saw Ockbrook slip to 162 for 8, with Ryan Cowley (3-37), Sam Jubber (2-59) and Zain Abbas (3-52) enjoying success, but vital knocks from Kevin Dean (24) and Lian Wharton (13*) were to eventually have a big impact on the game.

Trevor Smith (4-36) struck early after the break with the wicket of Luke Harvey but Ticknall assumed control, seemingly anyway, thanks to another fine Paul Borrington innings (95) and good knocks from Abbas (29) and Jack Lamb (57), the latter hitting 4 sixes and six fours in a short 37-ball stay. It was Lamb's dismissal to Dean (3-36) that turned the tide and Ticknall's late desperation saw them sink to agonising defeat by the smallest of margins.

3 P Borrington - 2 J Guthrie - 1 T Smith

Clay Cross (2pts) 140 all out [49 overs] (B Clarke 54, J Kyte 3-32)
lost to
Marehay (22pts) 144-3 [26.1 overs] (W Lategan 55, A Walters 38)
by 7 wickets

REPORT: Marehay win number four

It was an easy day at the office for promotion chasing Marehay who brushed aside Clay Cross who slip to the foot of the table as a result.

Brad Clarke (54) hit a fine half-century for Clay Cross but they could manage only 140 all out with James Kyte (3-32) doing much of the damage.

Waldo Lategan (55) and Andy Walters (38) impressed after the break with Marehay cruising to a seven wicket win in just 26.1 overs.

Clifton (22pts) 115-3 [30.5 overs] (R Mohmand 69*)
beat
Staveley Welfare (1pt) 114 all out [48 overs] (L Douglas 30, P Hort 3-29)
by 7 wickets

REPORT: Clifton stay in touch

Clifton maintained their challenge in Division One with a comfortable win over Staveley Welfare who were dismissed for a lowly 114.

The wickets were shared amongst the Clifton attack with Peter Hort claiming 3 for 29 and there were a couple of wickets apiece for Riffitullah Mohmand (2-14 off 12 overs) and Achin Chand (2-22). Only Liam Douglas (30) and Paul May (10) shot double-figure scores for a disappointing Staveley.

A couple of early wickets after tea promised much for the visitors but Mohmand (69*) single-handedly swept Clifton to a seven wicket win inside 31 overs.

Denby (22pts) 168-6 [36.4 overs] (P Burgoyne 40, S Bhatt 39, D Burgoyne 32*,
R Wood 4-38)
beat
Stainsby Hall (5pts) 167-9 [50 overs] (A Lynch 73, P Burgoyne 4-43)
by 4 wickets

REPORT: Denby back from the brink against Stainsby Hall

Denby made it eight wins from eight in Abbey Glass Division One but they were made to dig deep for their victory by a persistent Stainsby Hall attack who reduced the leaders to a shaky 92 for 5 in response to their own rather modest 167 for 9.

Rob Wood (4-38) and Tom Wood (2-41) gave Stainsby the edge at that point, despite a positive opening from Sunil Bhatt (39), but Derbyshire Academy star Peter Burgoyne (40) and brother Dan (34*) turned things around with a sprightly partnership of 73 for sixth wicket. Victory was then but a few runs away and finally came in the 37th over.

Earlier in the day Ashley Lynch (73) dominated an opening Stainsby stand of 76 with Tom Wood (18) but Ahtesham Yaqoob (2-30) hit back for Denby with two quick wickets.

Peter Burgoyne, though, was Stainsby's main stumbling block and no-one else was able to make the same mark as opener Lynch as Burgoyne helped himself to fine figures of 4 for 43. Denby's lead at the top is now a very healthy 36pts

Elvaston (12pts) 201-8 [47 overs] (N Briars 56, D Lewis 43, S Lillie 30*,
R Pretorius 3-40)
match abandoned v
Eckington (13pts) 187-4 [42.2 overs] (K Fields 73*, L Staniforth 56*, I Hall 3-42)

REPORT: Elvaston still off-colour

Elvaston, relegated from the Premier League last term, are still struggling to find their best form this season and were saved by the rain in their latest encounter against Eckington.

Nick Briars (56) gave Elvaston a positive start but South African Ruhan Pretorius (4-40) hit back for Eckington and the home side slumped to 57 for 5. Salvation came from the lower-order in the shape of David Lewis (43), Simon Lillie (30*) and Ian Hall (28) and Elvaston managed to post 201 for 8 from the 47 overs available.

Further rain delays made the encounter a time match and early after tea Eckington crashed to 35 for 4 with Ian Hall claiming 3 for 42.

Karl Fields (73*) and Lewis Staniforth (66*) then combined brilliantly to set up the prospect of an unlikely win but the visitors had reached 187 for 4 when play came to halt after 42.2 overs and they had to settle for a haul of only 12pts instead of 22.

Elvaston claimed 11pts and languish a disappointing seventh in the table, some 26pts behind sixth-placed Marehay.

Eckington meanwhile climbed off the bottom of the table, being replaced by Clay Cross who lost to Marehay.

Matlock (19pts) 234-8 [47 overs] (E Lowe 93, K Leatherday 61,
M Conway-Jones 4-57)
drew with
Sawley & LE Park (9pts) 178-8 [47 overs] (G Birley 52, P Camm 3-44)

REPORT: Sawley second-best at Matlock

It was always going to be a tough call for Sawley & Long Eaton Park to get much out of their trip to improving Matlock but they avoided defeat albeit with a haul of only 9pts.

The match was reduced to 47 overs a side by an early interruption and Matlock moved on to an impressive 234 for 8 thanks to Ed Lowe (93) and Kevin Leatherday (61) despite the best efforts of prolific wicket-taker Marius Conway-Jones (4-57).

Gary Birley (52) hit an important half-century after the break to help Sawley stave off the threat of Peter Camm (3-44) but they closed on a fairly distant 178 for 8.

Rolleston (6pts) 178 all out [49 overs] (A Britton 35, S Cobley 35, M Scott 5-48)
lost to
Swarkestone (22pts) 179-7 [48 overs] (M Scott 52*, Z Fried 4-46)
by 3 wickets

REPORT: Swarkestone ease home after Rolleston scare

Swarkestone eventually recorded a three wicket win over strugglers Rolleston on Saturday but their reply was in poor shape at 91 for 6 at one stage in response to the home side’s 178 all out.

Aussie Zac Fried (4-46) was doing most of the damage and when Chris Fulton fell to Luke Nelson, Swarkestone were still struggling on 117 for 7. Mike Scott, however, had settled in quite comfortably and his excellent 63-ball unbeaten innings of 52, along with that of Joe Stuart (25*), made for a fairly comfortable end to the day.

Scott (5-48) had earlier bowled impressively as Rolleston, who slumped early in their innings to 24 for 3, struggled to master the bowling of him and fellow opener Bruce Dilks (2-31). They recovered somewhat through the efforts of first, Tom Rutter (27), and then both Alex Britton (35) and Scott Cobley (35) but Richard Gregson (2-26) struck late on and 178 was a fair way short of what was needed
