Staveley Through In FA Cup Battle

Tuesday 23rd August 2011
by TERRY DAMMS

Staveley MWFC made the next round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 score line that probably flattered them against Winterton Rangers in a game full of incidents.

Andrew Fox
came in for Simon Barraclough and Michael Staley continued at centre half alongside Tom Jones with Ashley Foyle injured and Ian Deakin replaced Ayden Duffy in goal.

For the second week running, Winterton felt harshly done by with a penalty that they hotly disputed and then in the second half they were reduced to 10 men on 54 minutes. From that point, Winterton lost heart as Staveley punished them, rolling the ball around with ease.

It all started off fairly well matched in the opening 10 minutes with Winterton's claims for a penalty and Staveley going close on 10-minutes after some good work by Andrew Fox and Martin Foster.

After quarter an hour, Staveley nearly undid themselves when they lost possession but Winterton failed to capitalise. On 24 minutes, Ian Deakin made his only real save of the first half. Looking to undo Staveley down each flank with a host of diagonal balls Winterton were struggling to break the Staveley grip their defence had on the visitors front line as Tom Jones was having a real captains game showing strength and determination throughout.

Staveley were gradually getting on top as Winterton's attacks all too often broke down with wayward passing and Staveley's strength at the back.

Winterton had to make a substitution when Daniel Smith went off with a badly twisted knee and an ambulance was called for to take the unlucky lad to hospital.

On 34 minutes Joe Thornton went past the full back and put in an excellent cross but the ball just eluded the Staveley attackers.

Aymen TaharOn 39 minutes the game erupted!

A poor Winterton free kick from their own half was intercepted by Staveley and Aymen Tahar (left) was played in.

Moving forward there were opportunities right and left but he played in Joe Thornton who clipped the ball around the keeper who certainly got his right hand to the ball but his left hand clearly brought the left winger down for a penalty.

Receiving  a caution the keeper was beaten for the second week running when Ryan Damms scored from the penalty spot.

The half time whistle went with Staveley going in 1-0 up in a half where the hosts had just about held the advantage.

The second half began with Staveley pushing on strong again. On 54 minutes Andrew Fox was on the receiving end of a badly timed challenge and Liam Nelthorpe was shown a straight red with the Staveley's midfielder shin pad and sock left in tatters and a 12 inch gash down his shin.

From this point Winterton just fell apart.

On the hour, Aymen Tahar put in a great cross from the left as Staveley's one man advantage had vividly turned the game. Joe Thornton was put in on goal by Aymen Tahar but this time the keeper stood up well and the danger went by.

With Staveley passing the ball around with ease, Winterton were forced to chase the ball and on a hot sunny day, that was no easy task against a Staveley side full of confidence.

On 64 minutes Staveley went 2-0 up when  Chris Fawcus looked up and played a fantastic cross into Ryan Damms who controlled the ball and scored with his second touch for his second goal of the match, seemingly putting the game beyond the visitors.

On 70 minutes Joe Thornton was replaced by Simon Barraclough and 3 minutes later the substitute put in some sterling work when he danced past the Winterton right back pulling the ball back for Martin Foster to slip the ball calmly into the net to make it 3-0.

Winterton's only real second half attempt came from ex Staveley player Danny Barlow but Ian Deakin looked comfortable in the net.

Aymen Tahar running through into the area was crudely pulled back by Andrew Walkden as the Staveley midfielder bore through on goal. Ryan Damms scored from the penalty spot for his hat trick to make it Staveley 4 Winterton Rangers 0.

A trip to Evostick South club AFC Goole on the 3rd September is the next piece of FA Cup action for Staveley MWFC.

Credit to the Winterton lads who ran their socks off but, on the day, Staveley MWFC had tamed the visitors enthusiasm and for the second time in a week, it was Staveley who had taken the spoils.
