FA Cup Replay Stretches Staveley To The Limit

An 87th minute equaliser for Goole AFC saved their blushes and earned them a replay at Staveley MWFC on Tuesday night as both sides will look to progress to the next round of the FA Cup.

Staveley's Simon Barraclough scores a tap in on 54 minutes score

Struggling with injuries and suspensions Staveley started with Simon Barraclough up top, Michael Staley at left back and Gavin Smith alongside Tom Jones. Chris Coy went out left and Luke Fletcher started again in the middle of the park.

In a game that Staveley will look back and regret not converting their superiority it was a chalk and cheese of style of plays that was so evident.

The 'boom-boom' tactics from Goole in the first half meant their goalkeeper had the ball at his feet more than any other Goole player, launching 70 and 80 yard balls on to the edge of the Staveley penalty area and looking for the knock down or second ball.

Contrast that to the efforts of Staveley who tried at least to get the ball down and play neat attacking football progressing up the field with passing and movement then it was a game of two halves.

With the wind behind them in the first half, Goole just went direct and, as percentages will produce chances, Ian Deakin was brought into the action in the first couple of minutes when he was felled by experienced Vill Powell and a lenient referee saw no need to caution the Goole striker for a very late and reckless challenge on the Staveley keeper.

On 30 minutes the referee did get his yellow card out when he somehow judged Staveley's Chris Coy to have simulated a dive when clean through beating the full back with pace he was simply tripped from behind in the area for the clearest of penalties.

Staveley showed a good sense of purpose down the right with Martin Foster and Kyle Fores-Chambers overlapping and several good opportunities arose from one or two good interlinking moves. Goole continued their aerial bombardment but Tom Jones and Gavin Smith held firm in the Staveley rearguard.

Using the full width of the pitch Staveley were looking dangerous on the break and seemed to have the beating of both full backs. Ian Deakin did have the one save to make when Glynn Cotton's effort but other than that there were few chances for the home side in the first 45 minutes.

It had been a very non-descript 45 minutes for both sides with a drab 0-0 scoreline.

In the second period Staveley started to dominate from start to finish. Goole continuing to rely on the direct long ball were pinned back in their own half for long periods of time and were finding it difficult to cope with Staveley's movement.

Forcing several corners, Gavin Smith had a chance to open the scoring on 54 minutes with a header from a corner. Chris Coy was giving the Goole right back a torrid time and a minute later he once again beat the full back and put in a good effort across goal which the Goole keeper managed to parry, but the ball fell kindly to Simon Barraclough who was in the right place at the right time and he scored from close range to give Staveley a well deserved lead.

Gooles keeper parries an effort across goal

On the hour Staveley looked like they were going to extend their lead with a scintillating run and effort from Kyle Forbes-Chambers when he chipped the keeper from 20 yards only for the woodwork to deny him.

Another Staveley corner this time produced a chance for Andrew Fox but his strong header flashed past the post with the keeper well beaten.

Staveley were now dominating the game pushing Goole back into their own half and there only way out was the long ball but, Staveley looked so comfortable at the back.

It was now one way traffic and Goole, trying to freshen things up, made several substitutions but Staveley looked well in command and looked to be heading for the next round of the FA Cup but, on 87 minutes Goole somehow got themselves out of jail.

A thrown in from the right was punted into the Staveley penalty area and a player coming back from an offside position toe poked the ball into the path of ex Staveley U19 player Aaron Martin who crashed an excellent 20-yard effort past Ian Deakin to give the Vikings a replay they hardly deserved with their only worthwhile effort of the second half.

To make matters worse Kyle Fores-Chambers was shown a red card for a verbal volley at the referee who had throughout the afternoon brought some entertainment to an otherwise drab 90-minutes of football.

The draw was the one result Staveley did not want with a host of injuries and suspensions the squad is being tested to the full but it is a squad that wins trophies and Tuesday it is likely that several changes may be made.

Kick off is 7:45pm with the winners travelling to either Liversedge or Pickering Town FC in the next round.
