Fire Involving Recalled BEKO Fridge Prompts Fire & Rescue Service Warning

Friday 10th August 2012

Fire Involving Recalled BEKO Fridge Prompts Fire & Rescue Service WarningDerbyshire Fire and Rescue Service have issued a reminder to householders that certain fridge freezers made by BEKO have been recalled after they attended a house fire which had been caused by the type identified.

Crews attended a property fire in Kings Road, Buxton at 14:54hrs on 7th August 2012. The property suffered quite serious damage, causing the family to be relocated temporarily.

The quick thinking occupier had unplugged the appliance before leaving the building. The property was fitted with a working smoke alarm which did activate although the occupier had already raised the alarm.

Fire investigators have now confirmed the fire started in a a BEKO fridge freezer in the kitchen of the property. Crews attending the incident were aware that this product had been recalled due to a potential fault in the defrost timer.

The owner of the property was not aware of this problem and had not heard of the product recall.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind members of the public, that should they own a BEKO Frost Free Fridge Freezer and the 12 digit serial number starts with the following digits: 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 or 06 they should contact BEKO on 0800 009 4837 who will arrange a modification free of charge.

Further details can be found on BEKO's website at www.beko.co.uk or the Trading Standards website at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk
