Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service says all roads are now open, but that it continues to have a presence at a fire which started at a recycling facility on Lows Lane, Stanton-by-Dale on Saturday 15 September 2012.

Fire crews have been at the fire since Saturday 15th September 2012, with up to eight appliances and over 60 Firefighters in attendance at the height of the fire last Saturday evening.

Area Manager, Bryan Bennett said yesterday "We have reached a point with the Lows Lane incident, where we're happy to scale down operations.

"Fire crews have worked extremely hard in arduous conditions to bring this large and complex fire under control. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service will remain in attendance for the next few days to assist partners in bringing a safe conclusion to the overall incident."

After scaling down operations, they continue to have a monitoring presence at the scene, and will remain working with partners until this incident reaches a safe conclusion.

However, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would still like to remind locals to take care if they are affected by the smoke, follow all previous advice regarding windows, doors and seeking medical attention if necessary.

Moreover, following several days of firefighting, taking measures to contain and extinguish the pile of recycled wood pulp and liaison with the Health Protection Agency and the Environment Agency, they are continuing to work closely with the Environment Agency and have mobilised a separate Fire Appliance which is working to pump contaminated water out of the canal at Dockholm Lock. This will help to draw fresh water into the canal and thus help the Environment Agency to raise the oxygen levels in the canal.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency East Area said: "We are mobilising our teams to start moving fish by electrofishing to a location where oxygen levels are normal. We will continue with the oxyjets until the fish are all moved or oxygen levels return to normal. We are using hydrogen peroxide to increase the oxygen levels in large parts of the Erewash Canal."

The Canal and Rivers Trust have closed the Erewash Canal at the Trent Navigation to prevent any potential discharge into the River Trent.

He continued, "We are also continuing to use a Canal and Rivers Trust barge which has two oxyjets, which are distributing the peroxide more uniformly along the length of the canal.

"We have reduced run off into the canal by diverting the fire water to a Severn Trent Water sewer."

Once again, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to thank the local community for their patience and co-operation during this incident and the road closures that were initially in place.

All roads are now open.
