The FA Cup -
Hospitality Above And Beyond

Sunday 7th November 2010
by Paul Fisher

The FA Cup romance was in abundance yesterday, it took me a good ten minutes walk around the ground just to reach the entrance yesterday, I came in from the wrong road and at one stage was contemplating jumping over the back garden of the hemmed in Earlsmead ground.

The friendly atmosphere conveyed by the staff of the Ryman League side unfortunately even added to the players on the field. Harrow were well beaten by the Spireites on a day of shocks around the country. Wins for Dover and Tamworth against league opposition make this the most fantastic competition in the world.

Scott Boden
started in the line up yesterday with good friend Jordan Bowery, the two youngsters contributed enough to trouble the Harrow back four. Boden in particular caused the defence issues, even when he had his back to goal, playing the pacy Bowery and the hard working Danny Whitaker in to get shots on goal.

Bowery, I felt was unlucky yesterday, that final pass and shot was just eluding the 19 year old and in the end John Sheridan felt the need to put top striker, Craig Davies on.

Davies is a player that Sheridan feels Bowery could learn from. Boden though, was rewarded with his hard work by scoring the opening goal of the match. Davies bagged the second in stoppage time and the match was won.

Chesterfield were never really troubled by the forward pairing of Troy Hewitt and Rocky Baptiste, but you could see where this strike partnership at lower non league levels will cause defences issues. Their movement and work ethic was superb, but they were never really going to get past Dwayne Mattis and Scott Griffiths, unusually playing at Centre Half this afternoon, before going back to Peterborough following the ending of his loan spell.

Expect Griffiths to be back in January if Posh are going to let the full back play in the FA Cup.

Harrow had some interesting other jobs for players- we had painters and decorators, Japanese students plus TV and ariel technicians.

Wycombe Wanderers provided the stewards for the match as the crowd of over 1,000 was the biggest at the North West London ground in their history in the first round proper.

Interestingly enough, it was the Spireites lowest crowd in the opening round of the FA Cup.

The draw is at 2pm on Sunday and as Droylsden are in the hat, I'm expecting them. I hope Harrow made some cash from the fixture, I feel for their manager though as fixture backlog is apparent for them, it took them four winning matches just to reach the first stage. Now they have a game against Aveley on Monday night with a chance to improve their league form.

As mentioned previously, the effort made by the non-league side to make the visiting press welcome and some of the national scribes was superb.

This match was beamed live internationally and was also covered on some radio stations. Yours truly was asked by Peak FM to cover the game as summariser, and our vantage spot was behind one of the goals and behind a window-pane.

Fortunately, no stray shot made its way towards us but that was always the fear, especially as there was a mud sprayed ball print on one of the glasses to our left.

This is life in non-league circles and for all its quirkiness and introvert characters you would not have it any other way!
