"It Was A Good Point" - Spireites Manager John Sheridan

Tuesday 20th March 2012

It Was A Good Point - - Spireites Manager John SheridanManager John Sheridan (left) took time out to speak to us before tonight's game against Huddersfield at the B2net.

We began by asking him if he'd been pleased to get another point from another top 7 side on Saturday?
"Yes, it was a good point, but obviously considering the position we're in ,we're trying to get three points from each game. It was a very tough game and I thought we acquitted ourselves really well and we started really well, got the goal and had good opportunities to get the second goal but obviously, it wasn't to be.

"Then I knew they'd come in to the game as for me, they're the best footballing side in the division. They came in to the second half strongly and took over the game for a little while, but I thought we coped really well.

"I was disappointed with the goal we conceded - but then we finished strongly. Both sides, to be fair to them, were trying to win the game, so that's full credit to them. So, it was a good point but, I would have liked all three points."

And that’s the frustrating thing isn't it, unbeaten in four, closing the gap and picking points up but you're still bottom of the league, having dropped back there on Saturday?
"Yes, we've always said, because of where we are, you would say a good point against MK Dons and Stevenage away, but the position we're in, we need to win games. We know what the situation is, so hopefully we can start winning one or two games and get closer, and out of the bottom four."

And it's still tight at the bottom, it's very do-able because it's so tight down there isn’t it?
"It is tight but the games are running out, so it's important to try, as quickly as possible, to get three points from the games we're playing, starting with the game against Huddersfield. It'll be a very tough game again, they're one of the best teams in the league but I'm really pleased with the players efforts at the moment, I can't really ask for much more from them - they're working really hard trying to get us out of the position we're in at the moment and hopefully we can continue at that level and hopefully, our luck will turn and we can start picking up points."

You bought Franck Moussa in from Leicester after we'd spoken last week - what can you tell us about him?
"He's a good footballer - an intelligent footballer - who gets forward and hopefully he'll create one or two problems going forward and nick one or two goals for us. I thought you could see even in the game on Saturday the little bits of quality. It was hard for him, he only came in Friday and was delayed a bit regarding Leicester. It was hard for Franck but I thought he acquitted himself well and it was a quick game for his first game. But hopefully he'll settle in after another day's training and hopefully he'll be a lot better on Tuesday."

Is there any news on anyone else likely to be in at all?
"No, I've got everyone who's nearly going to be fit during this week and for the next couple of big games, so not at this moment, no."

Has it been a big surprise that players didn't want to move on loan?
"You can only ask a question - do you want to come and play football - and unfortunately, a lot of them don't. It's entirely up to the player, his decision, if you're not a playing footballer - I know what I'd have done if I was sat on my backside - I would have gone and played but, unfortunately that's not the case with a lot of players, but we try and we try and it's disappointing sometimes with clubs saying they're not letting them out. I mean it's backfired on us a couple of times with a few players we've asked about and they've ended up going to other clubs, but that's the way it is and you just have to get on with it."

But it's notable that this weekend, two former loanees have had big games - Lee Johnson set up the winner for Kilmarnock and David Davis started against Manchester United, I'm guessing that being fully match fit helped both of those progress?
"Yes, it's about playing football. Lee wasn't playing, it helped him coming here and getting a few games, but David has been playing regularly all season but I'm pleased he's doing well - good luck to the lad, he's got a good career ahead of him. He's been around a while, unfortunately he got injured the other day. Lee's a great pro and I'm pleased for him as well."

Onto Huddersfield, they're doing really well and have a new manager...
"Yes, they're a good team, one of the strongest in the league, I know the Manager Simon Grayson and his backroom staff - and he'll be telling them that they can get out of this league automatically, so they'll come here thinking they can get the three points, so we have to make sure that we don't make it easy for them - make it as difficult as possible and for us try and get three points from the game."

And you've got no Liam Ridehalgh for selection - he's their player?
"No, he won't be playing, that was something agreed when we signed him so no, Liam won't figure."

Any other injuries?
"No, just Jimmy Juan, Robbo (Gregor Robertson) won't be fit until the end of the week and Nathan Smith has only trained one or two days, but I'm still confident that we'll get a good result."

And bad news at the weekend with Fabrice Muamba collapsing at Tottenham?
"God - when you're disappointed at not winning football games, that puts it all into perspective! I wish him well and hopefully he'll fully recover and get back to where he was."
