"I Want What You Want" - Spireites Boss Sheridan Reflects On Huddersfield

Thursday 22nd March 2012

I Want What You Want - Spireites Boss Sheridan Reflects On HuddersfieldAfter Tuesday's home defeat against Huddersfield, Manager John Sheridan faced the media and he told he was disappointed to have lost.

He was asked first whether it was two clinical finishes that had settled the game?

"Yes I think so. They're a good team, strong and well organised, they've got good players who can score goals.

"I thought we started really well and when they got their goal I was gutted as I was really pleased with the way the lads were going about their business.

"Just before they got their goal, we had a great opportunity as Westy (Craig Westcarr) reacts to their shot and Jordan Bowery had a chance as well and we were really matching, if not playing better than them, then the goal's given us a setback. But we did the basics wrong which really cost us, then they had one or two more chances - but it's us mis-kicking the ball, the little things, like I keep telling them a header should be cleared with distance and you should clear a ball down the line, we just do things that cost us, it gives the opposition a bit of belief that they can get in the game.

"It was always going to be difficult - and once they get the second goal... It was poor play on our part and it was a great finish from him. We've had chances to score one or two goals but, at the end of the day, we wanted something from the game. I can't fault their efforts."

As you say Chesterfield started brightly and forced their goalkeeper to make some saves...

"Yes, I thought we really came out of the blocks and started really, really well. We had good tempo and one or two chances. Rhodes would have scored that chance from the keeper, he would have reacted, but we didn't. Jordan Bowery had an effort but it was with his left foot, so it was quite a tame effort.

"Then the goal was a goal that shouldn't have come! A simple ball in the box, though to be fair to him, he's hit it well - and the second one was down to us doing the wrong thing at the wrong time and it's ended up in the back of the net."

This crucial period that you've had - Huddersfield, Stevenage, Mk Dons and you have Sheffield United to come of course - what were your expectations from these games?
"I've said before, you can see the teams at the bottom who are fighting and getting results, even Walsall have gone to Sheffield Wednesday tonight and got a point, so, I think anyone can beat anyone on the day in this league but the most consistent teams, they're the ones at the top. It's the magic word - consistency - and we're not consistent.

"Players are playing really well at times, but I thought one or two who'd played well over the last 10 or 11 games were off colour. And it's getting that consistency, that's what you need as a team. If you can get 8 or 9 doing it week in week out, then you can get out of this division. I think these are the better games you want to play as a player and I think we've competed quite well against them, but we've only got 2 points."

It's been a tough period, but 2 points going into a Wembley fixture on Sunday for which all the shackles are off - they can play with a little bit more freedom because it's not league points at stake?
"Yes, but I'll still be looking at the league table. I'm down because I don't want to be losing football matches. I want to get out of the position we're in to give ourselves the best chance.

"I'll enjoy Wembley, but I know where my priorities lie and we need to start picking points up. I really think that if we'd been playing someone other than Huddersfield tonight we would have won.

"The way players are trying to win games - we're all down and I know people are saying things because we're losing games - but performance wise, we're not doing badly.

"We had some good chances tonight but we haven't hit the net. We've had 28 crosses compared to their 10, that says it all, but they're better in the box. They have players who want to score goals and sometimes, we're very naive, were already stood in the box when the ball come in and they should be timing their runs. We keep telling them and hope it sticks. That's why the big players get paid the good money and they play to their strengths."

You left out Danny Whitaker and Jack Lester tonight, is that with Sunday in mind perhaps?
"No, I just thought with the game Alex Mendy came on and Craig Westcarr came on the other night, I was tempted to play Nicky (Ajose) for that bit of energy up front and I thought it looked really good at the start, but then it faded away and in the last fifteen, I didn't think we were doing the right things even though we had chances. Big long hoofing balls, that's not what I want us to do and sometimes they need to think about what they're doing. They shouldn't be doing that."

And full steam ahead for Sunday, it'll lift the players playing at Wembley?
"It'll be good if we can go there and get a victory, that's what I want more than anything else. The fans haven't had much to cheer about and again, they've got right behind the team again tonight. I feel very sorry for them as they're very frustrated.

"I don't disagree with them for one minute, with anyone - they want what I want, I want what they want - and I think sometimes, you say things you don't mean, but I'm not stupid, we're bottom of the league and my position's always going to be in doubt if we're bottom of the league and not winning football matches. Whilst I'm here and whilst we have a chance, I'll be doing my damndest to get us out of the bottom four."
