Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service Make Every Contact Count

Thutsday 13th December 2012

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service Make Every Contact CountDerbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is supporting health and care organisations across Derbyshire as part of the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) initiative.

MECC
, an NHS led initiative is about encouraging and helping people to make healthier choices to achieve positive long-term behaviour change. All organisations responsible for health, wellbeing, early years, education and care of the public can train their staff to use every encounter with a member of the public as an opportunity to promote health and wellbeing.

Delivering healthy messages and signposting to healthy lifestyle resources in this way has become known as Making Every Contact Count or MECC.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has said that is taking this opportunity to encourage its workforce to engage with the public in conversations about smoking, healthy diet, healthy weight, exercise and alcohol intake, providing simple, brief lifestyle information and being able to signpost members of the public to existing support services where appropriate.

MECC, an NHS led initiative is about encouraging and helping people to make healthier choices to achieve positive long-term behaviour change.Group Manager Steve Helps said "Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service recognises the importance of health and wellbeing and is pleased to be working with the NHS on the MECC initiative. Our workforce makes contact with members of the public daily, giving us an ideal opportunity to engage with them and point them in the right direction for advice and support.

"The MECC initiative also gives us an opportunity to link this advice into important fire safety messages such as the dangers of smoking in bed and cooking when intoxicated."

Derek Ward, Joint Director of Public Health at NHS Derby City & Derby City Council said: "Public health in Derbyshire is delighted to be working with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service in taking health and wellbeing support out to the people of Derbyshire.

"The NHS and many of its partners will be encouraging people to ask about any lifestyle concerns that they have and will be ready to help with information and support when needed."

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service actively promotes health and wellbeing to all members of its workforce, offering advice and support.

Health and wellbeing information is now available to the public via our website www.derbys-fire.gov.uk, where advice regarding smoking, drugs and alcohol, mobility and fitness and nutrition is available.
