The Big Clean Up

Wednesday 13th october 2010

Police in Chesterfield have joined forces with community groups and school pupils to clean up a local park and put an end to littering and underage drinking there.

Officers from the Dunston Moor and St Helen's Safer Neighbourhood Team worked with the Friends of Stand Road Park, Stand Road Bowls Club, Chesterfield Borough Council and Cavendish Junior School to give the park a facelift on Tuesday, October 12th.

The council's Spire Pride team spent the day trimming back the hedges while school pupils joined volunteers from Friends of Stand Road Park, local Police Community Support Officers and volunteers from Stand Road Bowls Club in picking up more than 20 bags of litter.

The clean up was done as part of Derbyshire Constabulary's Operation Relentless, a six-week initiative aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and alcohol related crime.

It was held during the 'Community Action' week, which started on Monday, October 11th.

PCSO Hannah Blockwell said: "The clean up went really well. All the children enjoyed it and it is great to get them involved in keeping their community looking clean and tidy.

"Hopefully it will encourage the people who use the park to throw their litter in the bin when they see how nice it can look."

The aim of the clean up was to improve visibility to the car park and make it a less appealing place for people to congregate and cause alcohol related anti-social behaviour - which has been a long-standing problem at the park.

Chesterfield Borough Council's enforcement officers have also been taking action recently; issuing three fines for littering in the park's car park during the past month.

Chairman of the Friends Group Graham King said: "I am delighted that the council were able to cut the hedges back for us and that volunteers from the Bowls Club and pupils from Cavendish School have agreed to help.

"I think Operation Relentless is brilliant. By involving the community in this way the police are sending out a clear message that the residents value their park and are not prepared to tolerate anti-social behaviour there."
