Appeal For Help On Burglaries

Thursday 18th November 2010

Officers investigating a series of burglaries targeting elderly residents in Chesterfield are appealing for information about the break-ins.

The home of an elderly woman, on Moorland View Road, was targeted between 7pm on Thursday, November 11th and 9am on Friday, November 12th.

Two men broke into the bungalow through the front door and grabbed the 84-year-old asking where her money was. They stole her handbag that contained cash and left.

The men are both described as white and in their 20's.

Another bungalow was targeted shortly after midnight on Saturday, November 13th on Albert Street North.

The 87-year-old woman woke up to find two young men with torches in her bedroom who said in local accents that they were from Careline.

They grabbed her handbag and a jewellery box containing pearl earrings, a necklace and bracelet before running off in the direction of the Whittington Moor roundabout.

A neighbour saw two men in the area at around 10.15pm on Friday, November 12th acting suspiciously.

They are described as white, one was slim and around 5' 10" and the other was shorter and stockier and wearing a dark hooded jacket.

At around 11.30pm on Monday, November 15th a bungalow was broken into on Allsops Place, off Stand Road.

The 88-year-old woman was asleep when a torch was shined in her face by a white man in his early 20's wearing a fawn coloured jacket and dark woollen hat.

He asked where her handbag was and another man, also in his 20's, then appeared in the doorway.

She pressed her Careline buzzer and the men tried to grab it from her before running off without taking anything.

Officers are investigating whether the burglaries are linked.

Anyone with information, or who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, should contact PC Adam Gascoigne on 0345 123 3333 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
