"I'd Sacrifice Today's Win For League Safety" Spireites Boss John Sheridan

Monday 26th March 2012

I'd Sacrifice Today's Win For League Safety - Spireites Boss John SheridanAfter his team beat Swindon 2-0 to bring home the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, a clearly ecstatic John Sheridan (left) faced the media and expressed his pride in the players and his delight at winning the trophy.

He was asked first of all whether it felt better winning as a player or as a manager?
"I couldn't answer that at the moment. I'd rather be a player than a manager to be honest. I'm very proud at the moment. I was lucky to have come here as a player and lift the trophy here, and score. To come here as a Manager - I'm very proud for the players, the supporters and the club - it's a great achievement - and to pick a trophy up can only do you good!

"But the league programme is always in the back of your mind, well it's always in the back of my mind, as I am desperate to stay in this division but, I'll enjoy today and enjoy the occasion and obviously, I'm really pleased for the players."

Do you think this will be a positive knock on to your efforts to stay in the league?
"I'd like to think so, it won't do us any harm! Even at half time, I said to the players just go out and be courageous, believe in yourself more - and I think we did that the second half more. We showed that we can pass it and we can disturb people and I thought we dominated the second half, they had a 20 minute spell first half - they're a good team - and for 20 minutes they caused us problems, not great chances, but they were passing the ball but, I didn't see that in the second half as we got tighter and a little bit closer to them."

What's the problem with Jack (Lester)?
"He's got a groin injury. It's a shame for him because of his age and it being a cup final - we didn't want him coming off really but, it's a groin injury so he needed to come off and get it sorted which is a shame. We'll just have to see, but because of his age, I don't know how serious the injury is - obviously we want him for games so were hoping it's not as serious as we think it is."

How devastated was he to come off?
"He's an experienced pro, he was gutted and I was gutted for him. I know if there was any chance to have stayed on he would have, he's that type, but he was obviously in pain so it was a shame but he had to come off."

What were you thinking when Westcarr went through one on one when you were one nil up?
"What are you doing?! Why aren't you hitting that target? He's been finishing every day of the week this week - he's one of the best finishers at the club, a very good finisher. He strikes the ball very well and I'm just surprised. I don't mind people missing targets but when they miss chances when they shouldn't, then that's what disappoints me, but I'm pleased he kept going and he played really well when he came on."

What was your thinking bringing Mark Randall into the squad?
"He frustrates me so much because of what ability he has got - it's scary what he can do at times. I've told Mark, it's how he goes about how he wants to play and if he shows me desire, and energy, a willingness to get round the pitch - because players do that who haven't got anywhere near his ability - if he did that, then everything else takes care of itself and he's trained well this week.

"As Jimmy (Juan) has only trained one day and Robbo (Gregor Robertson) has only trained one day, it was too early to get them involved in a game like this. Mark's trained though - and he played as if it was just so easy for him."

He passes it like you did when you were playing...
"I said that to him, not in a big headed way, but I think that's why I signed him as a player, I told him 'you remind me of myself a little bit', but I used to go in and look at every single player who will make you a better player, go in and get the max out if it every day - every player should do that, because if you do, you get rewards on the pitch."

Is there a danger that the season could still be a big disappointment, you could still go down couldn't you?
"I will enjoy it, and I won't get carried away. It's great for the supporters, it's a trophy and I won't disrespect it. It's our second trophy and it's been a great two or three years but, I know where my loyalties stand and I'm desperate to stay in this division. We're good enough and we should be staying in this league, but it's going to be very difficult."

Would you sacrifice this afternoon for three points?
"I'd sacrifice this afternoon for staying up! If we had the luck we'd had in the Johnstone's Paint with all the games we've won, we would be safe now. I would sacrifice today to stay up, definitely!"
