Eight Projects Secure Funding To Reduce Unemployment

Monday 25th October 2010

Chesterfield Borough Council has announced it is to fund eight projects aiming to get people back into work through it's Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF).

The £771,673 funding allocation comes from the remainder of the Council's WNF budget that was first released in 2008 and runs until March 2012. The money, distributed by central Government, is used to provide resources to councils to tackle all aspects of worklessness including low levels of skills and enterprise.

Cllr Ray Russell, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: "We've been running a number of successful projects since 2008 that have resulted in over 1,300 people either securing employment or receiving training to get them ready to enter the job market.

"This is all good news for people in Chesterfield and we hope this next phase of the funding will be just as successful and will be working with all the partners involved to make sure we maximise the job opportunities available for people living in the Borough.

"The eight projects will offer a range of opportunities for the long term unemployed or those at risk of long term unemployment- helping them learn new skills and offer advice and guidance to help secure employment or make them ‘job ready."

The main focus for each of the projects is as follows:

  • The Involve Access programme from The Volunteer Centre aims to tackle barriers to employment caused by mental health and social exclusion, by supporting volunteers who have serious mental health issues to find suitable and rewarding voluntary positions.

  • Equip to Grow from Chesterfield & North East Derbyshire Credit Union will enable CNEDCU to update, modernise and improve it's services to the community.

  • Staveley Financial Inclusion Project from the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers' Centres will provide local residents with a tailored package of advice and support that suits their personal circumstances.

  • Dealing with Debt from Links CVS will work on a project that brings together all the financial inclusion advice that’s available in the Borough to advise frontline staff who work in the areas of housing, health, employment etc.

  • JobFinder from Connexions Derbyshire Ltd aims to reduce worklessness in 16 to 24 year olds within the Chesterfield area by engaging with employers to increase the number of job opportunities accessible for young people and develop their employability skills.

  • Employer Engagement from the Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce/Derbyshire Enterprise Agency will respond to the needs of local employers and inward investors, by matching their recruitment requirements with the skills of local people, especially those from the most deprived parts of Chesterfield.

  • The Connect Project from Chesterfield College will work with unemployed individuals from across Chesterfield who have a criminal record in the delivery of a personalised employment support programme.

  • Work Focus from the Shaw Trust will provide a programme that will employ a minimum of 28 people over a 20-week period with at least 30% moving onto long term employment.

More detailed information on each of the projects can be found in the Economy section of the Council's website: www.chesterfield.gov.uk
