Reds Boss Urges Team To Show Their Mettle

Saturday 12th March 2011

ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law praised his side's durability after another tough week of games.

Law's team have responded in the best possible fashion to the Telford defeat just over a fortnight ago, reeling off three straight wins in seven days.

And while Law thinks most people would have marked down title-chasing Alfreton for the wins against Gloucester City at home last Tuesday, away at Vauxhall last Saturday then at Worcester City on Monday, he says the players are well aware that every team is raising their game against the Reds.

He said: "We have just come three tough games and the players have done exactly what we wanted them to do.

"The one thing we asked them to do was show their mettle after the defeat at Telford and they have certainly done that.

"Having Anton Brown, Matt Wilson, Ian Ross and Josh Law back, along with the introduction of Daryl Clare, has given us a lot more natural balance.

"Gloucester were good opposition and they gave it a very good go last Tuesday. We then had two difficult away games.

"Vauxhall were on a good run and we went there and kept a clean sheet and scored twice. In fact, if we had been a bit more clinical, we could have had six.

"Worcester then gave us a really good game on Monday. From our point of view it was an awful playing surface, not conducive to passing the ball in any areas and it was a case of battling away and grinding the result out.

"There are no easy games, that has been proved this week. They were not three easy games, I can assure you. Every team we play is raising their game but we take it as a compliment. We have known the whole season that no week is any different to the one before and the ones to come. They are all tough.

"The fact everyone is raising their game against us is another mental hurdle our players have to understand. They have to be 100 per cent every week because everyone else will be trying that hard.

"We know what we have got to do and hopefully achieve, and how to go about it.

"I hope Worcester can perform as admirably and competitively against our rivals for the title over the next few weeks. I am sure if they put that level of performance in, they won’t be where they are in the table at the end of the season."

This Saturday the Reds return to the Impact Arena and a home game against Corby Town. Next Tuesday brings a trip to fourth-placed Boston United, the only side to win at the Impact Arena so far.

Supporters' Association transport to Boston will depart at 4.45pm and seats can be booked via Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.

For the Corby home game Law will be without Anthony Wilson and Chris Hall, both carrying minor injuries.

Meanwhile, central defender Paul Lister has moved to Frickley Athletic on loan until April 5th.

But Reds boss Law thinks he will possibly be the last player going out to gain match fitness, particularly with the end of the season just over seven weeks away.

He ended: "We could have sent Anthony Wilson back to Matlock but it would have meant losing our 24-hour call back on him. They [Matlock] failed to renew his loan at the time and that would have meant a new one being set up.

"If we send anyone out now we aren't going to get them back until mid-April and that is probably too near to the end of the season to be of any use."
